ANOTHER ONE FOR THE MOVIE BUCKET LIST: 1948, THE MIRACLE OF THE BELLS

It's no secret. We love church bells...especially in the fall and winter months...whether it's St. Augustine's Episcopal, Holy Name of Mary, or any of the other area churches...the sound seems to carry best on the cold air.

This reminded us of a vintage movie magazines haul at a local flea market....one of which which contained a rarely seen ad for the wonderful and uplifting 1948 film, THE MIRACLE OF THE BELLS....(CLICK ON THE PHOTOS AND LINKS). And by sheer coincidence, it was on late night television in recent days.......

The Miracle of the Bells is a 1948 American drama film produced by RKO. It stars Fred MacMurray, in his pre-MY THREE SONS days--Alida Valli, an Italian actress who appeared in over a hundred films--- a very young Frank Sinatra---and gravel voiced Lee J. Cobb.

Directed by Irving Pichel, with a script by Quentin Reynolds and Ben Hecht. The film is based on a novel by Russell Janney.

The story begins as Hollywood press agent Bill Dunnigan (Fred MacMurray), who works for a movie studio, arrives by train with the body of actress Olga Treskovna (Alida Valli), in her home town of "Coal Town," named for its coal mining industry. He has brought her back to "Coal Town" to honor her deathbed request to be buried there.  Read more about the film here.

While the film was not successful upon its release, it has developed a cult following--both here and overseas.  It's sincere and uplifting without being trite and preachy.  We seldom miss an opportunity to see it.  It's also available on Amazon
