FROM CONGRESSMAN MIKE LAWLER --LAWLER SECURES $2MILLION FOR NORTH STATE ROAD IN THE TOWN OF OSSINING

Proud to secure $2 million for the North State Road Water Main Replacement Initiative in the Town of Ossining through the FY24 and FY26 appropriations packages. This funding will upgrade Ossining’s aging water distribution system along North State Road by replacing cast-iron water mains that have experienced frequent breaks and service disruptions in recent years. These investments will improve water reliability for nearly 38,000 users, reduce costly repairs, protect public health, and strengthen the long-term resilience of the community’s infrastructure for years to come. In total, I secured $31 million in the FY26 Appropriations Package for projects across New York’s 17th District. VIDEO AT (4404) Rep. Our curiosity was peeked, and a reader wondered if this was one of the leads that the late Robert Scott may have mentioned for his CHRONICLES OF CROTON's VAUDEVILLE

She did some snooping about the "T. BACON DENNIS" named in the ad. Google AI to the rescue:
While "T. Bacon Dennis" is not widely recognized today as a prominent, nationally touring vaudeville headliner, local history and genealogical records strongly point to him being a regional performer or member of a theatrical family in Westchester County during the early 20th century. [1]
During the vaudeville boom circa 1907, the Hudson Valley was highly active with regional theaters, amateur "hose company" or lodge performance troupes, and traveling novelty acts that frequently played local opera houses. [1]
The plot thickens. She said she'll be back.
Stay tuned.

IN THE NEWS--LIBERAL COURT STUNS WITH RULING THAT HANDS TRUMP MAJOR IMMIGRATION WIN

A liberal-led federal appeals court handed President Donald Trump two immigration victories Wednesday, reversing separate district court orders that had delayed the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for migrants from South Sudan and Ethiopia.

The judgments from the First Circuit Court of Appeals come after U.S. District Judges Brian Murphy and Patti Saris issued back-to-back orders temporarily blocking the Trump administration's termination of TPS for Ethiopia and South Sudan, respectively, late last week. The rulings drew sharp criticism from legal experts and Trump administration officials, who called the judges "rogue" and argued their decisions defied the Supreme Court.  More at Liberal court stuns with ruling that hands Trump major immigration win

THE PETITION OPPOSING MAMDANI'S PRESENCE AT THE 9/11 CEREMONY HAS NOW REACHED OVER 71,000 SIGNATURES AS OF 8/3

An update from Change.org - A PETITION FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

UPDATED---PLEASE NOTE--OVER 71,000 SIGNATURES as of 8/3--PLS KEEP THE PETITION MOVING-- EXCERPT: SEE IT ALL AT THE LINK BELOW

Concerns have been raised about Mr. Mamdani’s public positions, associations, and responses to rhetoric that many perceive as hostile to these shared values. These include: A perceived reluctance to clearly and unequivocally condemn phrases such as “globalize the intifada,” which many interpret as endorsing or normalizing violence.

Support for, or associations with, individuals whose public statements or records are viewed by concerned family members as dismissive of American institutions or insufficiently critical of extremist ideologies.

Mr. Mamdani’s own father, whom he has acknowledged as having shaped his views, penned a book shortly after 9/11 in which he argued that suicide bombers should be “understood as a feature of modern political violence rather than stigmatized as a mark of barbarism.” He also argued that there was a moral equivalence between the United States and al-Qaeda.

Mr. Mamdani has praised Brooklyn Imam Siraj Wahhaj, who has been linked to radical Islam, was named as an alleged co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and served as a character witness for the “Blind Sheikh,” who was convicted in 1995 of plotting terror attacks against the United States.

Mr. Mamdani has blamed the United States for radicalizing Anwar al-Awlaki, an al-Qaeda propagandist linked to the 9/11 hijackers. Critics have likened this to blaming victims rather than perpetrators.

Mr. Mamdani appointed Ramzi Kassem, who previously represented Ahmed al-Darbi (convicted in an al-Qaeda tanker bombing plot), as New York City’s chief counsel.

Mr. Mamdani has endorsed candidates such as Aber Kawas, who described 9/11 as an attack “a couple of people did in the context of U.S. capitalism, racism, white supremacy, and Islamophobia,” and who also expressed sympathy for Ahmed Ferhani, who pleaded guilty to plotting to blow up a Manhattan synagogue.

AN OPEN LETTER REGARDING PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT IN THE HARMON AREA

Back online:

To the Croton on Hudson Village BOT, Mayor, Village Manager and Planning Board, and Karen Stapelton,

I’m disappointed to hear the village is considering letting a developer put a massive apartment building in across the street from Shop Rite where the children’s gym Straddles and other stores are currently, despite traffic, and steep slope laws.

My three daughters have all enjoyed the Straddles gym which has been there for over 33 years and has had thousands of children go through it. It’s a community asset that’s now on the chopping block for money and development.

I don’t understand why our village is adding a marijuana shop and catering to this businesses needs and wants yet now we looking at a popular gymnastics studio in Croton possibly getting the axe.

As a side note, It was fantastic when over a decade ago CVS decided to stop selling cigarettes in a public effort to promote human health and longevity. Right after that the BOT allowed the vape shop in right next to it which has been busted several times in sting operations for selling illegal substances. Yet their permit was renewed to operate despite how close they are to schools.

It’s disgraceful to see what is going on in Croton. Myself and others literally feel the town is going to pot.

How about taking a long look in the mirror and changing your ways as the great Michael Jackson encourages and saying no to greedy developers, no to drugs and smoking and yes to Children’s gyms and other shops.

I am asking you to change the direction we are going in. Our schools are full. I know because ai have one child in each school building. Our roads and services are full. Stop over developing our tiny village. Prioritize citizens and not developers. Prioritize human health. Prioritize Straddles. Say no to this new project.

This letter should be saved with village records of complaints.

As a side note, no one knew last night's meeting was not one that allowed public discussion. It was only standing room last night in the meeting and most people were frustrated we couldn’t speak and share our concerns. Please let me know when exactly the next meeting will be that will actually allow public comments. This is critically important.

Thank you,

—Jessica Dieckman

Subject: Additional Question…To the BOT and Village manager and planning board,

There was an approved plan previously under the previous owner (Tom Farracaro) of the existing building (425 South Riverside Ave) to allow 10 apartments to be built above Straddles with Straddles staying there and two store fronts to be added.

Why is there a new plan out there now to go grandiose and build this big new building now, minus Straddles and you have steep slope issues? What happened to wanting mixed use buildings? Why and when did that change? Look at Samurai and Baked By Susan. What happened to this goal? Why are we now into the plan of cramming people into big apartments with no stores?

The Blaze and the traffic problems there should make this big grandiose apartment a no go immediately. Have the developer go back to the original Tom Farracaro plan immediately. Please answer my question.

—Jessica Dieckman

US Bishops Tighten Funeral Policies After Growth of ‘Irregular Practices’

CROWD-SOURCING A REQUEST FOR SOME ACTUAL HARD DATA

A reader asks:

Do you know how to look up what percentage of our tax base should be commercial vs residential? The news site says 11.4% is commercial in Croton. 72% residential. I think we have too much residential, not enough commercial. In any case, I'd appreciate the help and confirmation of the numbers.

Response: We had this data from back in the day when residents brought the Article 78 against the village's massive rezoning of the Harmon area for housing. Let it suffice to say it is no longer available. If anyone can assist, please email or comment---or post on social media. (We'll hear about it eventually, smile. Stay tuned for the latest YADA YADA YADA later.)

LIVE LINKS--HAD TIME---HERE YOU GO--INFO INCOMING VIA GOOGLE AI PLS DO YOUR OWN DUE DILIGENCE

Understanding the Commercial vs. Residential Ratio
There is no single "magic number" or mandated ideal ratio for a local tax base. Municipalities vary widely by layout, zoning, and geography, but urban planners generally look for the following dynamics: [1, 2]
  • The "Ideal" Balanced Target: Urban planners and public finance experts often point to a 70% residential to 30% commercial/industrial ratio as an ideal benchmark for a sustainable suburban community.
  • The Benefit of Commercial Base: Commercial properties are highly desirable tax sources because they generate significant revenue without placing a corresponding demand on the local school district—historically the largest portion of a homeowner’s tax bill. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • The Croton Context: As a bedroom community primarily zoned for single-family homes, Croton naturally experiences a structural tilt toward residential properties. This means a much higher proportion of the overall tax levy is carried directly by local homeowners. [1, 2, 3, 4]

You can see the 7/28 Planning Board meeting at Planning Board Meeting

Despite the sometimes-torrential downpours, there were many residents present as you can see. The applicant, however, was not allowed to speak nor were residents. Planning board members felt that application's paperwork was essentially deficient. Everyone will be back 8/11.  There's much more but really, you should watch the meeting.

A READER HAS PASSED ALONG THE FOLLOWING REGARDING DEVELOPMENT IN THE SOUTH RIVERSIDE/HARMON CORRIDOR

Please note: this is AI-generated and you should do your own follow-up, verification, etc.  The 2003 Comprehensive Plan: Adopted in January 2003, this foundational plan extensively details zoning limits, infrastructure capacities (including sewer easements, pump stations, and traffic bottlenecks), and explicit rules regarding multifamily density. It identifies the South Riverside/Harmon corridor as a major commercial/residential center but cautions against over-development due to structural and environmental constraints. You can read the digital text chapters of this era's plan on the Croton-on-Hudson eCode360 Document Repository. [1, 2, 3]
