AN UPDATE ON THOSE MISSING SIGNS ON JACOBY

The following letter was published in this week’s issue of the Gazette, with an editor’s note stating “this letter was submitted prior to the signs being taken down. There has been no announcement from the village as to whether the signs will be reinstated.” As the author states, “In accord with the new Municipal Building custom of non-transparency and keeping Croton residents in the dark, there was scant outreach or even explanation.” READ MORE HERE

FDR V.A. POOL RE-GRAND OPENING NOW OPEN FOR VETERANS USE AUGUST 2018

FROM THE TOWN OF CORTLANDT SUPERVISOR PUGLISI--FDR V.A. Pool Re-Grand Opening--Press Release Date: August 28, 2018--Victory for our Veterans-- the V.A Hospitals’ Pool is Open for Veterans Use

On Monday, August 27th, I attended the Re-Grand Opening of the FDR VA’s Veteran’s Pool. This Olympic size pool, which has been closed for 15 years, was finally opened today after a two year construction period. Myself along with our Veteran’s Chairman and Committee, Town Board members and other officials have lobbied the Veteran’s Affairs in Washington, DC for years requesting that they invest in the restoration of this pool for our Veterans.

Yesterday was the ribbon cutting and I was delighted to be asked to say a few words on the program by the V.A. Director Margaret Caplan. Special thanks to Congresswoman Nita Lowey, who was able to get federal funding through her position as the ranking member of the Appropriations Committee (approximately 2 million). We thank her for these efforts. This pool is therapeutic for our Veterans and they can use it for exercise and recreational purposes, as well. We were told that many other new programs are coming to our V.A. facility for our Veterans. It is a great day for our Veterans and well deserved!

MORE HOLBROOK BLINN, THE CROTON CONNECTION

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton-on-Hudson: our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Croton has been home to many screen and theatre stars.  One of these was matinee idol, stage and film actor Holbrook Blinn (of Bliin Road fame).

Courtesy of the Everything Croton Elves, some bits and pieces about Holbrook's career...Click on the photos and links.

Wikipedia: Blinn was born in San Francisco. His father was Charles H. Blinn, a Civil War veteran and his mother Nellie Hollbrook was an actress. He appeared on the legitimate stage as a child, and played throughout the United States and in London.

He also appeared in silent films, and was the director of popular one-act plays at New York's Princess Theatre.

In 1900, he appeared in London in Ib and Little Christina. His Broadway stage successes include The Duchess of Dantzic (1903, as Napoleon), Salvation Nell (1908) in a breakout performance as the brutish husband of Mrs. Fiske.

Other performances were in Within the Law (1912), Molière (1919), A Woman of No Importance (1916), The Lady of the Camellias (1917), and Getting Together (1918).

Some of his finest silent screen accomplishments are in:

McTeague (1916)
The Bad Man (1923)
Rosita (1923),
Yolanda (1924)
and Janice Meredith (1924), the latter two films both starring Marion Davies.

Blinn died from complications of a fall off his horse near Journey's End, his Croton-on-Hudson, New York home.

He is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New York.

You can read and see more about Blinn here and here.

SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: PETER FRAMPTON, GLORIA SWANSON & LENORE ULRIC

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: PETER FRAMPTON, GLORIA SWANSON, AND LENORE ULRIC--click on the photos and links.

First up, from 1972 and the long-gone Patent Trader, an article about Peter Frampton's solo album WIND OF CHANGE.

Frampton had previously been the lead guitarist with HUMBLE PIE.

For those who don't know, Frampton lived right outside the village but was a frequent visitor. Read more here.

See Frampton today--or rather from 2011--courtesy of friend Sylvain Nadeau---click here.

Next up, Croton's own Gloria Swanson (see photos from her Croton home here) in a 1938 ad for, of all things, Double Mint Gum!  The key to charm and popularity....

Celebrity endorsements are nothing new...

But Double Mint Gum---not quite what your editor expected.

Then again, there's this 1913 ad for Croton's Lillian Nordica and her famous weight reducing BATH powder! Click here.

And here's a quick blurb about Swanson doing her own "stunts" so to speak in BEYOND THE ROCKS from the 1922 Photoplay.

And yes, Gloria gets rescued by none other than Valentino---THE Valentino.

Read more here.

Speaking of endorsements, here's Lenore Ulric in a 1920 ad for HYGLO MANICURE PREPARATIONS....

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE NO THRU TRAFFIC SIGNS?

Many residents have asked "WHAT HAPPENED TO THE 'NO THRU TRAFFIC SIGNS' on Jacoby?  They've disappeared". Sorry, your editor does not know the answer.  You can try asking the board/staff but with the new policies/restrictions on social media commentary and more, who knows.....

ANOTHER BANNER AUGUST SATURDAY IN THE HUDSON VALLEY: HARMON DELI, JUST ADD WATER ORCHIDS AT SHOPRITE, CORTLANDT VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK, THE VERPLANCK NATURE PRESERVE, THE RESERVOIR & TURCO's

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

ANOTHER BANNER AUGUST SATURDAY IN THE HUDSON VALLEY:  HARMON DELI, JUST ADD WATER ORCHIDS AT SHOPRITE, CORTLANDT VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK, THE VERPLANCK NATURE PRESERVE, THE RESERVOIR & TURCO's.

Click on the photos and links.

FIRST UP, AN "EARLY BIRD WRAP" FROM THE HARMON DELI (egg whites, broccoli rabe, and avacado on a multi-grain roll)....Formerly LaMonica's, the "Harmon Deli" was extensively re-modeled and re-opened in 2017.

See their breakfast menu--and much more, by way of Croton Suburban Guides here. (PS: We love their home-made mozzarella.)

NEXT, a birthday gift for the gardening friend who can't get enough---THE JUST ADD ICE line of orchids at Croton's Shoprite.  Extensively renovated and completed in 2017,  Shoprite now boasts a beautiful new plant, floral and gift shop.....filled with sustainably grown items, often beautifully packaged, and more. (FYI--a very large section of front wall near the registers has been reserved for the sale of reusable bags.)

Shoprite is also currently home to some of the most beautiful orchids in every price point.  THE JUST ADD ICE LINE is the easy way to keep an orchid in tip-top shape and a perfect gift.

That done, we headed to the Verplanck waterfront and an easy walk through the Town of Cortlandt Veterans Memorial Park where we spotted this beautiful heron near the dock.

Then a quick amble up the road to the Verplanck Preserve and Nature Trail (read and see more about this great spot here).  A Heads-Up: Don't wander off the trails/paths. This is truly a wild, beautiful  place and you'll avoid the ticks, poison ivy, etc.

While your editor is happy to report that beautiful new wrought iron benches have been strategically placed at the Preserve, there's also some sad news....

Because it appears that an old hot water heater tank has been dumped into the small lake.

The Town has been emailed...

And then for a beautiful drive---we headed past the Croton Reservoir---always an impressive sight in any season--to stop at Turco's in Yorktown for two of their specialty items:  stuffed portabella mushrooms and their house-made mango salsa. Always call in advance to make sure they have them available.

On the way back to Croton, we spotted two immature eagles engaged in a spat over a fish near the Croton Dam!  It's nice to know that some eagles appear to have made the Hudson Valley their permanent home.
