Charles Elmer Hires (August 19, 1851 – July 31, 1937) was an early promoter of commercially prepared root beer. He was a Quaker pharmacist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who formulated the eponymous Hires Root Beer beverage.

At age 12 he worked as a drugstore boy. When he was 16 he moved to Philadelphia and worked in a pharmacy. He saved until he had nearly $400, when he started his own drugstore. YES IT'S TRUE---THE EAGLE HAS LANDED…IN CROTON

The bald eagle population in NY has hit a 41 year high, and the outlook in Croton is for even more eagles in the future.

Croton resident Rob Armanini of Feed The Birds reports that around 8-10 eagles are in the Croton area, and he says that number is likely to improve: “Sort of like wandering teenagers, eagles roam widely but tend to return to their natal territory. This is why NY State had a decades-long effort to bring baby eagles from Alaska and raise them on artificial platforms. As those eagles mature, they come home to what they regard as their birthplace in New York.”

Croton Mayor Schmidt noted that bringing the bald eagle back from the brink of extinction in New York has been a result of many people working for many years, beginning with federal legislation to ban DDT back in 1972 and...read more here http://tiny.cc/hykqmy

MORE ON CROTON EAGLE SCOUT DANIEL PARKER, VIA LOHUD

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

CROTON EAGLE SCOUT USES HIS EARS TO CREATE GARDEN MADE FOR BIRDS...LOHUD

CROTON-ON-HUDSON - A summer day finds Daniel Parker spotting seemingly every bird around — by their songs. “That’s a cardinal,” said Parker, 18, who was born blind. On cue, the red bird serenades again. “That one," he added, "right there."

Parker, of Croton-on-Hudson, stands in Croton Point Park near the Hudson River by his Eagle Scout project: A garden that’s something of a bird magnet. The recent Croton-Harmon High School graduate, who recognizes perhaps hundreds of migratory and nesting birds’ sounds, surveyed the birds in an area of the park last year and researched which native plants would draw them for rest, food and to breed. FROM 1922, CROTON'S LENORE ULRIC IN DAVID BELASCO'S "KIKI"

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

As many of you know, The Croton Historical Society hosted a Croton postcard exhibit IN 2013. Also included in that exhibit were photos and rare memorabilia of Lenore Ulric, a successful Broadway and film star who lived in the village from 1927 until 1951. Miss Ulric, discovered by Broadway playwright and producer David Belasco, starred in such popular vehicles as "Tiger Rose", "Kiki", "The Harem" and "LuLu Belle" and was particularly noted for her portrayals of the "fem fatale" hot-tempered fiery woman. We came across this article on Ulric in our vintage magazine collection for "Kiki", 1922...click on the images below.

Here is her NY Times obituary http://nyti.ms/2tZrZV5

FROM 1918: FOR FANS OF ACTRESS FAY BAINTER WHO LIVED IN CROTON IN THE 1930'S

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

For those who don't know, actress Fay Bainter lived here in the village during the 1930’s. She was recently featured in an exhibit by THE CROTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY. We love coming across Bainter's early stage work in our vintage magazine collection; here she is in a 1918 production of The Kiss Burglar---Bainter was apparently the only shining light in the production.
