LETTER FROM SUPERVISOR BECKER: TOWN'S POSITION ON CROTON COURT, NEITHER FOR NOR OPPOSED!

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship---in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Letter to the Editor: Cortlandt’s Position on Croton Justice Court
February 28, 2022

Town of Cortlandt Position Statement on Village Court Dissolution

In response to recent articles and editorials published in local publications, I thought it appropriate that the Town of Cortlandt provide a position statement on the possible dissolution of The Croton Justice Court. Simply put, The Town Board and I are neither formally supporting nor opposing this proposal.

The Town has been advised of the deliberations that have been ongoing within the Village of Croton-on-Hudson for the past few weeks about the potential abolishment of its Justice Court. As a cost savings measure, and as part of the general move towards municipal cooperation, the Village of Croton approached The Town Board of Cortlandt to investigate this option. As discussions progressed, one point became clear: under State law, this is purely a Village decision. If Croton abolishes it’s Justice Court, then by law, the Town MUST assume responsibility by providing this necessary service. The Town has no role or authority to influence this decision; we simply respond to whatever is decided by The Village.  MORE AT https://riverjournalonline.com/letters/letter-to-the-editor-cortlandts-position-on-croton-justice-court/29743/

Ah but first some images from the Fuller Brush Salesman--then Charles Boyer--no connection whatsoever, just some marvelous ephemera scans sent to us from the Canadian contingent; the ads are from 1922; the Charles Boyer ad from 1943. And finally from the archives, the vintage smoker and composition houses exhibited back in 2020 via a Peter Oehmen and Linda Starek collaboration.  Again, click on the photos and links.  See more of the Oehmen Stark collaboration at https://www.cardboardchristmas.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1979

The vintage chenille trees alone are worth the trip---and wondering if they could be reproduced by a certain clever crafter we know----but it's the outstanding way things are arranged that really hits the mark.  Spend some time at http://chippyshabby.blogspot.com/2012/12/vintage-christmas-this-years-vignette.html

YET ANOTHER CHANGE FROM THE CDC----NOW SAYS SOME PEOPLE SHOULD WAIT LONGER FOR 2ND COVID SHOT DUE TO HEART INFLAMMATION RISK

By Zachary Stieber----February 23, 2022 Updated: February 23, 2022---The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has officially altered its recommended COVID-19 vaccination schedule in a bid to address concerns about the elevated rate of heart inflammation seen among many groups who have gotten a vaccine.

The two most widely administered COVID-19 vaccines in the country are made by Moderna and Pfizer. Recipients are advised to get a two-dose primary series of each.

Before the new update, people were told to get a second Pfizer shot 21 days after the first, or a second Moderna shot 28 days after the first.  The new guidance says people can wait as long as eight weeks between the first and second jabs.

Lengthening the interval is a response to the higher-than-expected rates of myocarditis and pericarditis, two types of heart inflammation, found among men under 40 and some females after they’d gotten a second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna jabs.  MORE HERE.

And Pete says: One of my new favorite groups of houses I call "Oddities" A Family of Their Own. I'm surprised at how many of these strange little fellows are popping up. I guess I always just passed them up and didn't give them their fair chance. Some are totally out on their own while others seem to be bits and pieces of other families or are a new family all together. (Editor's note: There will be more soon!)

And finally,  Blumchen's "tissue festooning" is now available; there's also a tutorial for making the nest shown. Still manufactured in America of high quality, vibrantly-colored tissue paper,
this festooning has added accents of crystal-clear cellophane frills to impart a
subtle sparkle.

A fun trim you can use as a decorative "grassy" accent all year round, we used this frilly festooning to make our cute Easter bunny nests!

Clearwater’s Strategic Plan to Re-Envision the Clearwater Festival

River Journal — February 21, 2022

The Clearwater Festival (AKA The Great Hudson River Revival), which has been held annually in support of the Clearwater organization’s mission, is undergoing a re-envisioning process to create an event that the organization can confidently sustain into the future.

With the scope of its typical programming and accompanying cash flow severely reduced by the pandemic, Clearwater did not have the upfront cash necessary to begin planning and production for a 2022 Clearwater Festival. Under the circumstances, the organization would not be able to build enough reserves by June 2022 to be able to weather a festival event that didn’t meet financial expectations due to inclement weather, continued Covid related health concerns, or other risks. AH DIVERSITY... EQUITY... INCLUSION... WELL NOT EXACTLY: PROGRESSIVE SUNY PROF REBUKED FOR RACE, GENDER POLICY - NY POST

You can't make this stuff up....

NY POST------SUNY Binghamton officials have rebuked a professor who said white students should clam up in class and let others lead academic discussions.  A syllabus for Ana Maria Candela’s sociology class alerted students that she would be calling on non-white coeds first.

Candela wrote that “if you are white, male, or someone privileged by the racial and gender structures of our society to have your voice easily voiced and heard, we will often ask you to hold off on your questions or comments to give others priority and will come back to you a bit later or at another time.”

Student Sean Harrigan shone a light on the pigment-specific pedagogy after he filed a Title IX discrimination complaint to the school.

Harrigan told The Post Monday that Binghamton officials scrambled to revise the syllabus and later insisted that they opposed the practice.

“How am I supposed to get a full participation grade if I’m not called on because of the way I was born?” Harrigan, an economics major, said Monday.

A school spokesperson said that they cleansed Candela’s syllabus of the offending phrases. MORE AT https://nypost.com/2022/02/21/suny-binghamton-professor-rebuked-for-race-gender-policy/

By Special Request, a favorite post of one our readers--an oldie but goodie from EFSP in 2016....Enjoy....

EFSP's Dazzling Dozen: At Home in Antiquity 10/1/16

Today is the opening of the exhibition Alma-Tadema, At Home in Antiquity at the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands.

EFSP'S DAZZLING DOZEN: AT HOME IN ANTIQUITY - The Dutch-born painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) was the most successful and seductive storyteller of his day. He accomplished this by an innovative use of space in his work. Through his great knowledge of archaeology and classical antiquity he managed to bring the days of ancient Rome to life in paintings. His scenes were received so enthusiastically all over the world that our present image of classical antiquity was influenced by them. In the European cinema and in Hollywood too, Alma-Tadema’s interpretation caught on and became the basis for seminal films about this era, from the Italian epics of the 1910s to Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000).

CONFIRMED - CDC quietly lowers early childhood speech standards

Since children are no longer able reach these previously attainable milestones, they have been lowered.

2/18/2022---The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has quietly changed their standards for early childhood development, as the effects of pandemic policies on children’s development, from speech to reading to other basics, becomes increasingly more apparent.  Earlier this month, the CDC announced that new checklist ages for its important milestone lists were added. These new ages added were 15 and 30 month.  READ THE DISTURBING ARTICLE AT THE POST MILLENNIAL HERE,

Of all the broken things the pandemic has revealed about our country, you can make a good case that the state of American education came out looking more battered than just about anything else.

There’s the stranglehold that the teachers unions have over our public schools. (And the influence those unions seem to have over our public health organizations.) There’s the war over masking our students — and the inability of the adults in charge to have an adult conversation about trade-offs and risks. There’s the revelation, via Zoom, that students might not be learning much of anything. (Besides obsessing over race.)
