MORE FABULOUS VINTAGE WEBSITES, FINDS, ETC. FROM EVERYTHING CROTON

Some great finds. As always, click on the photos and links.

We just love vintage department store photos--and so when the request came in for the one "with the hobby horse", we just had to share it again.  Here's a shot from 1942 with the quintessential Flexible Flyer Sled--but what really caught our eye was the price tag for the fabulous hobby horse--just shy of a hundred dollars!

Quite a sum back in 1942! Check out all the details on the horse in the photo that follows.

Next up, a shot again by special request of Lynn's white Dolly Church putz repro--the pattern is online on http://bit.ly/1YkwX6G in case you missed it back in the day.

And of course we love vintage Christmas textiles, especially those 1950's, 1960's "aprons"...here's a beauty from Angela....again, click on the photos and enjoy.

One more time: Got any of those Lionel, Flyer or Marx billboards that need replacement, or you're just tired of looking at the same ones?

Winced36 has found a great site--see more at the BIGINDOORTRAIN FORUMS here

CROTON'S HOWARD DA SILVA, THREE HUSBANDS, 1951

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

CAME ACROSS THESE BITS AND PIECES ABOUT A 1951 FILM, Three Husbands, featuring Howard da Silva, Eve Arden, Ruth Warrick, and Emlyn Williams.

(For those who don't know, Da Silva lived in Croton for many years. You can read more here.)

Wikipedia--The Plot: When a recently deceased playboy, Max, gets to heaven, he is granted a wish. His request: to watch his three best friends, with whom he regularly played poker, for the next 24 hours. That day, each man would receive a letter; tomorrow, Max's will is to be read. Each letter states that he had an affair with that man's wife, all of with whom he was close.

Here's the poster and a mini-write-up from 1951 Modern Screen magazine.

The film received mixed reviews but it does have some very witty moments--and in the end, all reconcile.

You can read more here.

Some outstanding finds today--as always, click on the photos and links.

First up, by special request, an oldie but goodie, an outstanding and rare survivor: Die-cut Christmas Greeting Tree Reflectors by Doubl-Glo, Made in the USA in the 1950's. Box shows that these were used on C6 lights. Made of cardboard with a foil like topping. About 3.5" wide. PHOTO COURTESY OF SCOTTG, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. They're followed by a wonderful vintage New York City Christmas photo circa 1910-1915, a street scene depicting a Volunteers of America Santa Claus.

And finally, the 1929 Christmas Tree of H.E. French, courtesy of the L.O.C., with quite a "putz" scene below it, and sliced for close-up viewing. Again, click on the photos and enjoy.

Same principle as vintage Christmas bubble lights--VINTAGE BUBBLER ADVERTISING--outstanding collection; click on the link and keep scrolling down the page once you get there. Courtesy of the forums at OLD CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTS DOT COM http://bit.ly/2gXk6Y0

For the reader looking for a hanging glass ball she can put a tiny putz village in--with a wide enough opening--a hanging glass terrarium may do the trick; you'll find them at Sav-on Crafts here

Worth a repeat visit: 1957 GE CHRISTMAS IDEAS BOOKLET; click here

AND ANOTHER, A SET OF VINTAGE GENERAL ELECTRIC CHRISTMAS LIGHT ADS; some familiar, others not so much--more here

A few of us have been playing with creating textures on the cardboard we use for putz houses, tags, and “landscape” platforms for our putz houses—and getting very inspired. Here’s one using plastic wrap – a very quick video; there's usually an ad first; click here

AND NOW...SOME MORE WINTER WEEKEND 2019 ADVENTURES IN THE HUDSON VALLEY

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

MORE WINTER WEEKEND 2019 ADVENTURES IN THE HUDSON VALLEY--Click on the photos and links.

Saturday & Sunday--a report from your editor and "the Elves": You've got to get up pretty early to see Hudson Valley eagles sometimes AND still find the time to finish all those annoying errands too....fortified with take-away French Toast from Franki's Grill, your editor and company headed off to Croton Point,  the Boat Launch, Georges Island, the Verplanck Waterfront, and the Travis Cove area in Peekskill.  We were not disappointed.  When there is ice on the river, there are eagles to be found.

Of course, river ice is beautiful all by itself--with strong reflective elements.

But back to those eagles...Dedicated watchers know there are rules to be observed during Eagle Season--but not everyone does.

If you're new to eagle watching, click on the photo to the right for a refresher course---and as always, please keep your pups leashed.  (That's for their well-being and wildlife's too.)  Your editor was pleased to see this informational posting at George's Island, one of the most popular viewing sites.

For those who want to know about George's Island and it's Croton connection, click here.

After spotting three immature eagles floating by on the ice flows, one of the locals told us that there were about a dozen in the Verplanck area and Cortlandt's Veterans Memorial Park-- also just leisurely floating by on the ice flows. Again we were not disappointed.

Your editor managed to snap this photo and was reminded to bring gloves the next time!  Wind off water can slice!

By the way, if you're looking for ticket info and more for Teatown's 2019 Eaglefest at Croton Point Park on February 9th, click here. (Snow date is February 10th).

As always, Croton's own FEED THE BIRDS will be one of the vendors.

We were also rewarded with the sighting of a male Canvasback duck, not exactly common for these parts.  He's the strand-out bird in the photo below on the right.

A large, big-headed diving duck with a gently sloping forehead and a stout neck, you can read and see more about Canvasbacks here.   He appears to have moved on when we returned again Sunday morning.

Much as we enjoy bird-watching, weekends also mean laundry, house cleaning, house repairs (minor if you're lucky!) and food shopping.

Speaking of lucky, we're fortunate to have a local hardware store still in the area--Buchanan Home Center.

And your editor highly recommends the Starfruit and Sumo Oranges from Shoprite, as well as the amazing take-away Penne Vodka from Giovanni's Italian Deli and Pastry.

And in the "get 'em while you can" department, we were pleased to see that Shoprite has once again brought in the Elmers Chocolate line of Valentine candy hearts.  This series always features nostalgic, vintage-inspired covers reminiscent of Valentine cards from the 60's and 70's--the boxes have become quite collectible--and the chocolate's pretty good too!

And back in stock at Feed the Birds, amazing American-made architecture for birds!

Perfect for gift-giving.

By the way, one of the Everything Croton Elves stopped by to see the Tim Robinson art exhibit at the Croton Library on Saturday and highly recommends it.  The exhibit runs through February.

ALSO FYI--SATURDAY'S HOOPS FOR HEROES EVENT at Croton Harmon High School was a huge success. Another one of the Elves said it was the most attended to date--see the photos here---and a neighbor can't stop praising the dinner she had at Fratelli's.

STAY TUNED FOR MORE HUDSON VALLEY ADVENTURES!

MORE FABULOUS VINTAGE WEBSITES, FINDS, ETC. AT EVERYTHING CROTON

Some wonderful finds for you today. As always, click on the photos and links.

First up: In an age of lattes, cold brews, and "artisan" teas, we found ourselves smiling when we came across this 1945 ad for Maxwell House coffee, complete with military men enjoying the proverbial cup of joe from a seemingly simpler time.

It's followed by great toy trains from the 1940 Sears Catalog. For some reason, this shot is turning out "small"; see the larger version here

And finally, an oldie but goodie from 2010, Linda's antique dresser Christmas putz village! Love the background effects. Again, click on the photos and links!

As always, Croton Harmon Educator and scorekeeper Patricia Lynch provided the following info and photos (all rights reserved): Both our girl’s varsity and boy’s varsity won today. The boys won against Westlake and our girls against Bronxville. Croton-Harmon School Board President, Iris Bugliosi won the day’s 50/50 raffle and donated her winnings to the Hope for the Warriors Foundation. It was a stellar day for a stellar cause. MORE FABULOUS VINTAGE WEBSITES, FINDS, ETC. FROM EVERYTHING CROTON

So much to share with you today--keep it coming--we NEVER get tired of vintage! As always, click on the photos and links.

To the right, a page from a 1917 Journal of Electricity featuring a Christmas window filled with Western Electric products for gift-giving.  Just swooning over the "Junior Range" for little girls, a pre-cursor of the 60's Easy Bake Oven no doubt(!)

Next up, an oldie but goodie---the outstanding white Christmas tree with putz house decorations and putz village beneath--from Matthew. We're not usually a fan of white trees but this one is quite exceptional.

It's followed by a great poster from 1943 on keeping war chatter to a minimum.....And then...we love indent Christmas ornaments--even when they're repros by Radko; see a Flickr album of Radko repro--and original--ornaments--assorted holidays--courtesy of Angela here

As many of you know, Radko also made a number of vintage Christmas light reproductions; here's an album from Mark--but first a description:

"Some of these photos are mine and some are from some friends who have sold items on eBay, so they were obtained from there. Interesting set includes the original Radko Shiny Brites including Snowmen, Santas, Glo Brites, Twirl Brites, Twirl Brites with star reflectors, Star Lites, Candle Lights and Blinking Bells. None of these light sets are currently being manufactured with the exception of a short run of bubble lights in 2011. All the rest have been discontinued as well as Bubble light trees and candoliers."

As always, some great stuff--click on the photos and links.

First up, some movie ephemera: the 1940 premiere of Walt Disney's Pinocchio really packed them in.

It was the second animated production by Disney--Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was in 1937--and was added to the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" in 1994.

It's followed by a great piece of musical "history"--the coin-op 1950 Band-Box!  READ MORE ABOUT IT HERE.

AND THEN...from 2010...a great repro/interpretation of an early made in Japan putz house from Howard Lamey.

Click on the photos and enjoy.

By special request: A method of applying "coconut" in putz house restoration and more...some years back, Tom Hull wrote an article on this subject. Click here.

To date my favorite piece from the American Dimestore collection, the ORANGE AND BLACK TAXI; click here

And it has great flattie potential too.
