VILLAGE RELEASES CROTON RIVER LAB TEST RESULTS

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

The village has released the Croton River water test results online, after previously refusing to release the results without a FOIL request. Glad to see that the village has responded to residents. See Below.

WILL CROTON'S BOARD OF TRUSTEES MAKE THE HARD CHOICES?

The following letter was published in this week’s issue of the Gazette.

To the editor:

Climate change is causing a rise in sea levels. That rise is going to continue for decades to come. Croton is located next to an estuary which is impacted by Atlantic Ocean water levels. Those two facts taken together suggest that we need to start coming up with a plan. But so far, the only near-term actions being taken in Croton are ones which will make matters worse.

In October 2018 Croton, Cortlandt and Buchanan convened a workshop to address the impact of climate change (see my letter in The Gazette, week of June 3/19). At that meeting there was discussion of the projected impact of rising water levels on Croton. In particular there was discussion of Riverside Avenue and Brook Street, including potential buyouts of property and construction of levees in the Hudson River. But our village government has never discussed this with Croton residents—before or since the 2018 workshop. Our Board of Trustees continues to avoid having any discussion of what steps the village will take in light of the floodplain projections.

I realize that dealing with mitigation of the North Riverside and Brook Street floodplain is not as fun as having demonstrations and marches. Instead of demanding action and shifting responsibility on national politicians, it necessitates taking action and making hard choices right here in Croton. So far the only action taken by the Board of Trustees has been to propose rezoning to increase apartment density in the very area which is going to be most impacted by the rising waters. This is the exact opposite of what common sense suggests. READ AND SEE MORE HERE.

ROB & MONICA'S LATEST ADVENTURES: THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF AUGUST

Rob and Monica's latest:

With July behind us and summer moving much faster than we would like, we headed into August with hope that estate saling would pick up. For over a year, the number of sales that interest us has dwindled. We don't think there are fewer estate sales. We just see fewer of our type of estate sales. We've spoken to fellow salers and they say the same thing. We hope that we see more great sales in the future but, for now, we'll have to take what we can get.

For the first weekend in August, there was only one sale of interest to us. It was the estate sale of Irv Gordon. Who is Irv Gordon, you ask?

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EverythingCroton.

VILLAGE SAYS CROTON RIVER LAB TEST RESULTS MUST BE FOILED

A reader who asked the Village to post the recent Croton River (fecal coliform) lab tests on the village website says that he has received a reply from the Secretary to the Village Manager. The village says that these results must be requested under the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL).

In the meantime, residents seeking to look at any of the test results should send an email to the Village FOIL officer at PDisanto@CrotonOnHudson-ny.gov and request copies of the documents.

CUOMO'S BUFFALO BILLION TAINTED TESLA SOLAR CITY FACES AUDIT, NY POST AND MUSK PROMISES ROBOFLEET ETC.

Tesla...Cuomo...Solar City...in the news....again....Just when Gov. Andrew Cuomo thought he was done with “Buffalo Billion”…

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli is conducting a sweeping audit of New York’s high-tech programs that will include a hard look at the taxpayer costs of the Tesla’s controversial SolarCity plant in Buffalo. “We have an audit underway looking at high-tech projects,” said DiNapoli spokeswoman Jennifer Freeman.

The audit will focus on high-tech programs run through the Empire State Development Corporation. One of the issues the comptroller would look at is whether taxpayers are getting enough bang for the buck — how many jobs are created and how much the state is subsidizing per job.

The Cuomo administration pumped $750 million into building the solar factory, part of his controversial “Buffalo Billion” program to revise the upstate economy. With just 750 jobs created at the plant that would come to $1 million to create each job. Even when factoring in thousands of other jobs created by Tesla, the subsidy would still be well into six figures per job. MORE TESLA, NY POST: Walmart claims roof fires caused by faulty Tesla solar panel.....The retail giant cut a deal with the company to install solar panels at 244 locations from 2010 to 2016 and now Walmart is suing for breach of contract claiming the panels aren’t safe and Tesla can’t fix them, according to a new Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit...Three fires broke out in the spring of 2018......“Why were multiple Walmart stores located all over the country suddenly catching fire? The answer was obvious and startling: the stores all had Tesla solar panels installed by Tesla on their roofs. At each location, the fire had originated in the Tesla solar panels,” the court papers charge. Then Walmart looked back and discovered that earlier store fires were also allegedly caused by Tesla solar panels, the court documents claim. READ MORE HERE

-Current and former employees at Panasonic's battery-making operation inside Tesla's Gigafactory said that it is a chaotic environment where standard operating procedures often go ignored and there's half a million pieces of scrap generated each day.

HRFA "Catfish Chaos" Tournament Results 2019

Matteo Dinis, age 7 from Cortlandt Manor, was named Youth Division Champion of the 2019 Hudson River “Catfish Chaos” tournament on Saturday, August 21st at the Haverstraw Marina where over $4,600 in cash and prizes were awarded to participants. Matteo is seen here proudly displaying his trophy and new fishing rod. Matteo was also the recipient of a college scholarship award, all courtesy of the Hudson River Fisherman’s Association.

The river wide tournament, sponsored and managed by the HRFA took place on Saturday, August 17th. Open to all age groups, the tournament’s main focus is on the children which is where the HRFA understands the future of the river depends. 151 catfish we’re entered by 150 participants at 8 weigh stations along the river where they were all measured, recorded and released by volunteer members of the HRFA.

Matteo caught his trophy 21” channel catfish at the Croton Yacht Club, alongside a contingent of Wounded Warriors and their families who were hosted by the club. Matteo caught his prize winner on bait he caught with his brother Logan, his Grandfather and Uncle which was shared with all of the Wounded Warrior participants.

This was the third year of this annual event. For information on future HRFA events and the organization in general, please visit them on their website at hrfanj.org. The next area river fishing event will take place at the Croton Yacht Club on Saturday September 7th at their annual “Hudson River Day” celebration. Their youth fishing clinic and contest is sponsored by the Yacht Club and managed in coordination with HRFA volunteers. Fishing contest prizes and raffle prizes will be awarded to children throughout the day. The event is held free of charge and is open to the general public. For additional information, visit crotonyachtclub.org.

Respectfully submitted,

First, the oldie but goodie--back in 2014, your editor nearly jumped out of her shoes when she found this orphan Christmas photo @ the Peekskill Attic Treasures Flea Market--and for the princely sum of a dollar.

For those who don't know, the term "orphan photo" applies to found photos that are no longer with their families. Probably 1930's or earlier--the back is marked Gourocle or Gourock Scotland. It's also been sliced up into smaller sections so you can appreciate all its vintage Christmas goodness. Periodic attempts are made to locate its Scottish "family" without success--but that's the way it is with orphan photos most of the time.
