NY POST: CENTAL PARK SHOWS JUST HOW OVER-FEARFUL WE HAVE BECOME AND OUR ANCESTORS WOULD BE AMAZED AT OUR HYSTERIA

And perhaps some local lessons to be learned as well....

Central Park shows just how over-fearful of coronavirus we’ve become, HEATHER MAC DONALD 4/28

To grasp the urgency of lifting the shutdowns, visit Central Park. At 5:45 am, maybe 100 runners and cyclists occupy it, spread over 843 acres. A large portion of these early-bird exercisers wear masks. if you yourself run towards an oncoming runner on a vector that will keep you at least three yards away, he will lunge sideways in terror if your face isn’t covered. The masked cyclists apparently think there are enough virus particles suspended in the billions of square feet of fresh air circulating across the park to enter their mucous membranes and sicken them.

These are delusional beliefs, yet they illustrate the severity of the paranoia that has infected the population, reinforced by the lockdown itself.

An increasing number of Americans want to continue the economic quarantine indefinitely lest they be “unsafe,” according to polls, a belief whose strength will make it that much harder to restore some semblance of economic normalcy.

It’s worth briefly reviewing the facts about outdoor viral transmission in order to assess the rationality of New York’s park users. The chance of getting infected across a wide open, windswept space is virtually nil, even if the imaginary carrier weren’t moving quickly past his potential victim. When it comes to viral infections, dose matters. Proximity to the carrier, prolonged exposure and being in an enclosed space are the biggest risk factors.

Even The New York Times, one of the most aggressive purveyors of virus hysteria, couldn’t avoid acknowledging this commonsensical truth about outdoor transmission. The director of Australia’s International Laboratory for Air Quality and Health told the paper: “Outdoors is safe, and there is certainly no cloud of virus-laden droplets hanging around.”

Two days later, the Times, back on its crusade to terrorize the citizenry, ran a full page of infographics under the headline: “Social Distancing: Why Six Feet?” A series of drawings showed the progression of pestilence emitted from a cougher across the six feet separating him from his unsuspecting victim.  You had to read the fine print to learn that this simulation was being run in a hypothetical room of 600 square feet.

OUR ANCESTORS WOULD BE AMAZED AT OUR HYSTERIA

"I have the highest respect for, and would never intend to denigrate, the tremendous fortitude of frontline medical workers, especially those in the hot spots. Nor do I mean to dismiss the grief and pain so many thousands of families are enduring, some of whom have lost multiple relatives to the disease. As a public health concern, our pandemic is significant.

What I am talking about is the general fear that so quickly and easily overtook our politicians, media, and then citizens at large, resulting in an overreaction of total lockdown and now, presumably, a permanent health emergency.  All of this led to the unnecessary wrecking of the economy and need for trillions of dollars in government funding — and all of this for a virus with an infection fatality rate that is probably under 1 percent."  READ MORE AT https://thefederalist.com/2020/05/06/our-ancestors-would-be-amazed-at-our-cowardly-coronavirus-hysteria/

EVERYTHING CROTON'S SERIES IS BACK! BY POPULAR DEMAND - GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN! AND NOW.... FIZZIES!

Back by popular demand: Everything Croton continues its very popular series GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN....and so without further ah-doo...

FIZZIES! A LITTLE HISTORY! Ruth Millard invented the idea for Emerson Drug Company, manufacturer of Bromo-Seltzer, by adding a fruit flavor that children liked. Lem Billings, a close and long-time friend of President John F. Kennedy and the Kennedy family, has also been given credit as inventor. "As Vice President at the Emerson Drug Company in Baltimore, he was responsible for inventing the 1950s fad drink Fizzies by adding a fruit flavor to disguise the sodium citrate taste." Once perfected, Emerson named the creation Fizzies. The tablet was dropped into a glass of water, then fizzed and dissolved, creating a sweet, effervescent drink.  Fizzies were first introduced by Emerson on a regional basis in July 1957.  In the 1950s and 1960s Fizzies came in seven flavors: grape, orange, cherry, lemon-lime, strawberry, root beer, and cola. AND NOW SOME MORE "MASK MADNESS".........SORRY....THE ANSWER IS STILL NO

For quite some time now, this blog has continued to receive commentary seeking to publicly shame people here in the village for not following "the new virus laws"....even going so far as to demand the arrest of the maskless!

These comments are usually followed--or preceded---by manifestos about how climate change is responsible.....or the president....how the closed churches must be "re-purposed" for use as hospitals in the future--even though we have "flattened the curve"......how all available land must be co-opted into community gardens...how masks must be worn at ALL times even in your own home...the car...when out driving...taking a walk...praying in church.....etc. etc. etc.

Oy...

Once again, the mask "mandate" is ONLY for when you cannot maintain social distance of six feet. PERIOD. End of story. Those medically unable to tolerate a mask are not required to wear one (OR UNDER THE AGE OF 2).

In short, the answer now....as was then---is still NO. Please take your willingness to name names...your "second surge of death" theories....and so much more........somewhere else. Your comments are incinerated on sight.

But not to worry. You are indeed fortunate that you live in a country where you have numerous outlets for your unrestrained "conversation".

This blog however, is not one of them. We're too busy helping our neighbors, supporting our businesses and churches.....and NOT calling the police on the maskless......etc. etc. etc.

First up, stretching chicken!  The old fashioned way---with CHICKEN A'LA KING; this is almost exactly how our family made it---but REGULAR MILK was substituted for the heavy cream....served over rice with the addition of a simple spring greens salad.  Add twenty percent more peas and mushrooms and this will satisfy even the hungriest crew. This recipe comes from the STAY AT HOME CHEF.

ANOTHER GREAT WAY TO STRETCH CHICKEN---"FORGOTTEN CHICKEN CASSEROLE"; we used four chicken breasts for this recipe (instead of six)--cut them into halves--and added an additional 1/4 cup of rice; no on felt deprived https://www.allfreecasserolerecipes.com/Chicken-Casseroles-Recipes/Forgotten-Chicken

It was true back in the 70's and it's true now--"Sloppy Joes" a.k.a. Manwiches---is one of the best ways to stretch chopped meat.

IN THE NEWS: CUOMO AND THE ESCALATING NURSING HOME SCANDAL, NOW BLAMES REFUSAL TO HELP ON "NAVY PROTOCOL"

This post is provided for informational purposes; it is closed to all comments.  Readers with questions etc. should direct them to the media source referenced. Excerpted; as always read the entire article at the link below.

Cuomo blames his refusal to help coronavirus-hit nursing home on Navy protocol

Gov. Cuomo claimed Monday that a Brooklyn nursing home that’s lost 55 residents to the coronavirus was denied a request to transfer patients to the USNS Comfort Naval medical ship due to federal “protocol.”

During questioning about the state’s handling of a desperate, April 8 request for help from the Cobble Hill Health Center, Cuomo said CEO Donny Tuchman “should have told the Department of Health, ‘I can’t handle these patients.’ ”

“The Comfort is a federal facility. It doesn’t take transfers from nursing homes,” Cuomo insisted, implying his Health Dept. was right to ignore the plea because Tuchman didn’t ask the right question....The governor also callously suggested that financial considerations were the reason the not-for-profit nursing home — which has topped the state list of coronavirus deaths at nursing homes since the data was first made public on April 17 — didn’t ask the DOH specifically to relocate its residents to hospitals, noting that the facility would “no longer be getting paid.”  “Ohh, money,” the governor sarcastically intoned.............read more at https://nypost.com/2020/04/27/cuomo-defends-not-sending-nursing-home-patients-to-usns-comfort/

SCIENCE SAYS IT'S TIME TO START EASING THE LOCKDOWNS

Excerpt:Now, we face another, even greater problem: how to sensibly re-enter normal life. This must be based on what we now know, not on worst-case projections, using facts and fundamental medical knowledge, not fear or single-vision policies.

First, we know the risk of dying from COVID-19 is far lower than initially thought, and not significant for the overwhelming majority of those infected.

Multiple recent studies from Iceland, Germany, USC, Stanford and New York City all suggest that the fatality rate if infected is likely far lower than early estimates, perhaps under 0.1 to 0.4 percent, i.e., 10 to 40 times lower than estimates that motivated extreme isolation...READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE AT  https://nypost.com/2020/04/26/science-says-its-time-to-start-easing-the-coronavirus-lockdowns/

ANOTHER BLOW DEALT TO PUBLIC FAITH IN SCIENTIFIC MODELS

Another blow dealt to public faith in scientific models: Miranda Devine

EXCERPTED: Of course, every death is one too many. But what we have seen over the past two months is that computer models are unreliable when it comes to predicting the future, and the premise we agreed on to vaporize 25 million jobs exaggerated the risks.
For people who understand how models work, their imperfections are no surprise. Coronavirus task force tsar Dr Anthony Fauci last month admitted that exaggeration was built into every computer model of diseases he’s dealt with: “They always overshoot,” he told CNN. AND

(YOUR EDITOR'S NOTE--Oh those consultants again) The next challenge is to re-open the economy, and Cuomo reportedly wants to spend money we don’t have on consultants, McKinsey & Co, to create — you guessed it — a computer model to tell him the best way to move forward.

EXPOSE, NY POST, CUOMO NURSING HOME SCANDAL CONTINUES, USS COMFORT AND MORE, EMAILS CONFIRM

New York health officials were warned in writing that a Brooklyn nursing home where 55 patients have died of coronavirus was overwhelmed — weeks before it began topping the state’s official list of resident COVID-19 deaths, damning emails show.

Cobble Hill Health Center CEO Donny Tuchman sent a desperate email to state Health Department officials on April 9, asking if there was “a way for us to send our suspected covid patients” to the hospital built inside the Javits Convention Center or the US Naval hospital ship Comfort — the under-utilized federal medical facilities on Manhattan’s West Side.

“We don’t have the ability to cohort right now based on staffing and we really want to protect our other patients,” Tuchman wrote in a chain of the emails reviewed by The Post. He was denied.

“I was told those facilities were only for hospitals” to send their overflow patients, Tuchman said.

At the time Tuchman sent his plea, only 134 of the 1,000 beds at the Javits Center were full and the Comfort — which had just been reconfigured to treat up to 500 COVID-19 patients — had a mere 62 on board.

Adding insult to injury, the Navy hospital ship wound up treating just 179 patients before Gov. Cuomo on Tuesday said it was no longer needed. READ MORE HERE

-----5/10 CUOMO REVERSES POLICY PARTIALLY; AARON FEIS--MAY 10, 2020--Hospitals can’t discharge coronavirus patients to nursing homes: Gov. Cuomo

This post is provided for information purposes and is closed to all comments. Comment and questions must be referred to the media source referenced.

Patients in New York hospitals must now test negative for the coronavirus before they can be discharged to nursing homes, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday — partially reversing a policy that forced sickened seniors into facilities housing those most vulnerable. “We’re just not going to send a person who is positive to a nursing home after a hospital visit,” said Cuomo during an Albany press briefing. “Period.”

The ruling partially overrides a controversial March 25 order that nursing homes cannot deny admission or readmission on the basis of a positive or suspected COVID-19 case.

That policy has been roundly criticized as counterintuitive for forcing coronavirus carriers into nursing homes, even as Cuomo has repeatedly acknowledged that seniors are among those most susceptible to the virus. PLEASE FOLKS, BE CAREFUL WITH THOSE MASKS

Your editor actually saw someone almost pass out in a local parking lot so the following article about a reported mask-related crash comes as no surprise. Please be careful.

Additionally--for our local "virus police", some people simply cannot tolerate wearing masks for medical reasons. You might want to keep that in mind before publicly shaming/naming your neighbors on local social media sites.

Driver crashes car after passing out from wearing N95 mask--A New Jersey driver crashed head-on into a pole — after passing out from wearing an N95 mask for hours, police said Friday. Lincoln Park police believe that the driver, who was not named, lost consciousness while behind the wheel Thursday from lack of oxygen and breathing in excessive carbon dioxide thanks to the mask, the department wrote on Facebook.
