WOO-HOO--SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY IN THE UPPER VILLAGE

Welcome to Everything Croton, (while the New One is down) a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

How wonderful to see the Upper Village stores so lively for Small Business Saturday. While it is true that "big box stores" have their place, it is equally true that smaller, locally owned shops, have theirs. And it is just cold enough to get everyone into the gift giving spirit. Let's keep it local folks, when we can!

BACK ONLINE--IN CASE YOU MISSED IT-- 11/20/2019--RE-POSTED BY SPECIAL REQUEST:

Welcome to Everything Croton, (while the New One is down) a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

BACK ONLINE--BY SPECIAL REQUEST: On November 30th, 2019, Purple Heart Homes (Downstate Chapter) held a fundraiser hosted by THE GRANDSTAND.......The benefit for disabled area veterans--with raffles, food, and music--drew a packed house.

Click on the photos (all rights reserved) and links.  Recognize any faces?!!

For those who don't know, Purple Heart Homes was funded by two Combat Wounded Veterans, Dale Beatty and John Gallina, who are on a mission to care for other service connected disabled Veterans by providing housing solutions either through rehab or remodeling of current housing or acquiring new housing to ensure safe, barrier-free living for Veterans with disabilities and the loved ones who care for them.

The 501C-3 Non-profit operates in Dutchess, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, and Orange counties as well as the 5 Boroughs of NYC.

If you couldn't make last night's event at The Grandstand but would still like to make a donation, the Downstate Chapter's FB page can be found here

Or you can contact Mark Franzoso directly.

Music at the 11/30 fundraiser was provided by MaryAnn Renza & Friends.

p.s. The Grandstand held their annual Potluck Leftover From Thanksgiving event on 12/1.

PLEASE NOTE: THE GRANDSTAND HAS CLOSED; IT WOULD HAVE TURNED 50 IN SEPTEMBER OF 2023.

Welcome to Everything Croton, (while the New One is down) a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

AND NOW A WORD FROM JASON SPYDA ADAMS--My art work will be on display at the Croton River Artisans Gallery for the month of November AND THROUGH SUNDAY, 12/1.

My work has been in comics, toys, advertising, fantasy art, and collectables. We are calling the show "Shapeshifter" because over the years I have had to change with the times and the tides of the art business, and adjusting to the styles and market. All hand sculpted by myself. No computer or AI. Some of the works are water color family art, while others acrylic and airbrush painted fantasy art. Even a wall plaque of the Yule Lads in cold cast bronze, who are Christmas Icelandic folklore characters. Come enjoy the reception or show up any time this month. CLICK ON THE IMAGE.

In fall 2023, Vivien Chen, a Croton-Harmon eighth-grader on the combined Croton/Hendrick Hudson Swim Team competed at the NY State Championship in the 100m freestyle. Chen had placed 1st in the Conference with a time of 54.32. This year, as a freshman at Croton-Harmon High School, Chen was a State Qualifier in the 100m freestyle (53.92) and the 50m freestyle (25:00) as she placed first in both events at the Conference Finals.

The 14-year-old Chen is now a repeat Section 1 Champion and competed in November at the NYSPHSAA Swim and Dive Championships held yearly at the Webster Aquatic Center in Albany, accompanied by her coaches, Lauren Siegel and Juliet Soricelli, who both teach in the Hendrick Hudson Central School District. Combining both Croton and Hendrick Hudson High School swimmers into one team has its challenges, but coaches, administrators, and the athletes have made it work. MORE AT

MSNBC SAYs IT WAS UNAWARE THAT SHARPTON'S NON-PROFIT RECEIVED $500K IN DONATIONS FROM HARRIS

MSNBC Acknowledges Al Sharpton’s Non-Profit Received Donation From the Harris Campaign Ahead of On-Air Interview Story by Alex Griffing

•MSNBC told the Washington Free Beacon’s Chuck Ross for a report on Tuesday that the network was “unaware” that Rev. Al Shaprton’s non-profit organization had received $500,000 in donations from Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, during the same time period he interviewed her on the network.“MSNBC was unaware of the donations made to the National Action Network,” the MSNBC spokesman told Ross some two weeks after the donation was first reported. Sharpton also did not disclose the donations to network executives, according to the spokesman.

Ross added that the spokesman “wouldn’t say, though, whether the left-wing network is taking any action against Sharpton for a move that appears to violate network policy.  More at MSNBC Acknowledges Al Sharpton’s Non-Profit Received Donation From the Harris Campaign Ahead of On-Air Interview

BACK ONLINE--SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: PETER STRAUSS, GLORIA SWANSON, LENORE ULRIC and OSCAR LEVANT

Welcome to Everything Croton, (while the New One is down) a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: PETER STRAUSS, GLORIA SWANSON, LENORE ULRIC and OSCAR LEVANT...as always click on the photos and links.

First up, from Croton's own Peter Strauss and Croton Shakespeare festival fame, a mini-review of 1983's SPACEHUNTER, ADVENTURES IN THE FORBIDDEN ZONE. Not the best film but then again, quite a few films from the 80's often lacked a certain something....

Next, Croton's own Gloria Swanson---sings! From 1929 and the advent of the talkies....and her film THE TRESPASSER.

For those who don't know, Swanson lived in the village for a number of years. You can see exterior shots of her Mt. Airy home here.

SWANSON ALSO DIED ON THIS DATE IN 1983; read more here.

Next up, Croton's Lenore Ulric in the 1929 production of Frozen Justice, another little mini synopsis.

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW: Frozen Justice is a 1929 American partially sound drama film with a synchronized soundtrack featuring music and sound effects directed by Allan Dwan.  The film was set in Nome, Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush in 1898 and 1899 and is presumed lost. You can read more about it here.

And finally, Croton notable OSCAR LEVANT. One of the elves stumbled upon this blog called Great but Forgotten A look at movies, books, TV, comics, music, and other things that deserve to be less obscure.

Their campaign was a testament to the power of grassroots action, neighborly dedication, and the shared determination of Croton residents to demand better representation from their local government. None of this would have been possible without the incredible efforts and unwavering support of this community. Thank you, Croton!

When Gary and Nigel launched their write-in campaign just two months before election day, they did so as a direct response to the frustration felt by countless residents—residents who had grown tired of being ignored by the Mayor and the current Board of Trustees. Their campaign wasn’t a protest; it was a bold bid to bring real change, to ensure that the voices of Croton residents were finally heard and prioritized.

This campaign, funded and run entirely by concerned residents, struck a powerful chord. Gary and Nigel earned nearly 35% of the vote during a high-turnout presidential election year—an achievement that cannot be overstated. Support for Voice of Croton came from residents across the political spectrum, united by one clear demand: change.
The message is indisputable. Croton’s residents are desperate for leadership that listens and acts in their best interest. The groundwork has been laid, and the momentum will continue to grow. We must remain engaged, demand transparency and no longer tolerate the status quo. Next year, with two trustee seats and the mayoral position up for election, the opportunity for change is closer than ever. Croton, let’s finish what we’ve started!

FISHING SEASON CLOSURE INFO FROM THE NYSDEC

Welcome to Everything Croton, (while the New One is down) a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Upcoming Fishing Season Closures

The last day of the possession season for black bass (largemouth and smallmouth) and muskellunge is November 30. For many counties the Catch & Release black bass season (using artificial lures only) will begin on December 1. However, fishing for black bass (including catch and release) is prohibited outside of the open season (June 15 - November 30) in Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Franklin and Hamilton counties.

Statewide seasons for popular sportfish such as walleye, crappie, trout, salmon and northern pike remain open in most areas of the state, so there are still plenty of fishing opportunities this time of year. Before venturing out, be sure to check the most current statewide and special fishing regulations available on the DEC website.
