THE KATZ IS OUT OF THE BAG

THE FOLLOWING LETTER WAS PUBLISHED IN THIS WEEK'S GAZETTE:

The Katz is Out of the Bag--May 31, 2019

To the editor:

The Katz is out of the bag. After months of rumor and speculation, the Board of Trustees have deigned to let a few select friends know what is going to happen with the village property which is the focus of the rezoning. Last week, the plan for development of the Katz property was finally told to the bottom level of citizens.

Croton has three levels of citizenship, as seen in the current re-zoning project discussion. At the peak are people like Ann Gallelli and Richard Masur: the ones whose vision will be imposed. Below that are people like Messrs. Doyle, Brumleve, and Kauderer: those who may whisper into the ears of Party leadership. At the bottom are folks like Mr. Schuerman: those who by the grace of Party leadership are granted a private audience for the purpose of being told what will happen in Croton.

Most readers of this newspaper don’t fall into any of those categories. They may be residents of Croton, but they are not citizens of Croton. They don’t participate in the actual decisions except to dutifully applaud and give a veneer of democracy. All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.

Remember the village meeting a few months ago? Ms. Gallelli told us (The Gazette, week of March 28/April 8) at the time: “last week Croton’s Village Board began a discussion with residents.” We were told of a taxpayer-funded $75,000 consultant study that would seek input. We were treated to a PowerPoint and they humored us with earnest expressions of thoughtfulness as audience members got up and spoke. Remember the consultant firm employee who circled around taking photos of us? READ THE REST HERE.

MORE FABULOUS VINTAGE WEBSITES, FINDS, ETC. FROM EVERYTHING CROTON

As always, some wonderful finds.  Click on the photos and links.

First up, an oldie but goodie. Another one of those great ads from the back pages of a movie magazine, 1960--100 LITTLE DOLLS ALL FOR A DOLLAR! Made of styrene (now there's a word you don't hear of too often any more) and hard synthetic rubber. Yes, we want them all.

That followed by a real find--Make Your Own Buster Keaton Movie--actually it's a flip book--and from a 1922 magazine.  We've sliced it into two parts for easier viewing.

And finally, a faux tinplate creation from Howard Lamey--because every village needs a bus station.

(Check out the Tribute to Tinplate from Paul Race here.)

Again click on the photos and links.

So worth looking at again: the coolest Disney blog--all vintage 1928-1945. It hasn't been updated in a while but we love it and there are some very interesting things on it--including early Mickey Mouse Thanksgiving Day Balloon photos vintagedisneymemorabilia.blogspot.com/

REMEMBERING CLAUDE RAINS

Who died this date in 1967. From our friends at European Film Star Postcards:

The career of English stage and film actor Claude Rains (1889 - 1967) spanned 47 years. In Hollywood he was a supporting actor who achieved A-list stardom. With his smooth distinguished voice he could portray a wide variety of roles, ranging from villains to sympathetic gentlemen. He is best known as the title figure in The Invisible Man (1933), as wicked Prince John in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), as a corrupt senator in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), and, of course, as Captain Renault in Casablanca (1942).  READ AND SEE MUCH MORE AT https://filmstarpostcards.blogspot.com/2016/01/claude-rains.html

PART TWO, 1973 CROTON, THE PHOTOS OF ALICE LEIGHNER

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Recently there was some discussion on the YOU NOW YOU ARE FROM CROTON-ON-HUDSON FB PAGE about freelance newspaper photographer and then village resident Alice Leighner. Indeed it seemed as if almost every other photo that appeared locally had been taken by Leighner in the 1970's and more.

Here's just a small sample of her work--PART TWO--culled from the archives of The Croton Historical Society--all from 1973; click on the images.

As always, some wonderful finds. Click on the photos and links.

First up, a recent chance encounter with an article about dying yarn with Kool-aid reminded us of Howard Lamey's "kool-aid" dyed coconut putz house experiment back in the day.

Read all about it here--and just keep scrolling down the page once you get there http://bit.ly/1hEbeW3

That's followed by a fabulous 1937 publicity still for Gary Cooper--strikingly handsome--AND FINALLY, AN OLDIE BUT GOODIE---THE PACK-O-FUN MAGAZINE! But seriously, Pack-O-Fun, a 70's publication, billed itself as "The Only Scrap Craft Magazine"--and if you think abut it, they were ahead of the curve---"upcycle-ing" everything from egg cartons to can lids.

Some of the scans you'll see at the link below are REAL hokey but--some of the ideas can also be "elevated"--and alot of them are fun, especially the 1970's ads.

Alas, most of the pages were beyond saving (stuck together) and this was all that could be salvaged. Click the link and enjoy: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22283683@N07/sets/72157626724529540/

Elizabeth has inherited some wonderful antique and vintage toy circus pieces; she's been bitten by the bug but knows her pocketbook will never sustain this new obsession if she stays strictly antique and vintage. She has, however, found this neat website; click on the link and enjoy a great tin toy site--reproduction (and more) pieces anyone can afford--and few with "putzing inspiration":

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: GLORIA SWANSON, FAY BAINTER AND HOWARD DA SILVA - Click on the photos and links.

First up--from 1929, a publicity still for Gloria Swanson, one of Croton's most famous notables--soon to appear in "The Swamp"---whose title would be changed to Queen Kelly--under the direction of Erich Von Stroheim! The film featured Swanson in the title role, Walter Byron as her lover, and Seena Owen. The film was produced by Joseph P. Kennedy, who was Swanson's lover at the time. READ MORE ABOUT THE FILM HERE.

Read more about Swanson and her Croton connection here.

Swanson would reunite many years later with Von Stroheim--this time he would be in the role of actor (as the faithful servant Max) and not as the film's director--in SUNSET BOULEVARD.

Next up is a two part review of the 1937 film, QUALITY STREET....featuring Croton notable Fay Bainter and starring Katharine Hepburn.  Bainter's performance was very well received.

For those who don't know, she lived in Croton during the 1930's; read more about that here.

And did you know that Katharine Hepburn got her start at The Croton Playhouse?  Read more about that here.

Next up, a very interesting and post on Croton's own Howard da Silva from the Scott Rollins TV & Trivia Blog.  For those who don't know, Da Silva lived in the village for quite a few years.  (Read more about his Croton connection here.)

Here's Da Silva in an episode of The Outer Limits, 1964's "I, ROBOT"

See lots more pix at Scott Rollins' post on Da Silva at  https://bit.ly/2KaciEP

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION, A GAZETTE LETTER: STOP THE SECRET PLANS, SECRET SESSIONS, & SECRETIVE WORKING GROUPS

May 27, 2019

The following letter was published in last week’s issue of the Gazette.

To the editor: There is a wide gulf between Karl Marx and Milton Friedman, but Richard Olver managed to travel the distance in just 5 weeks.

In the April 4/10 issue of The Gazette, Mr. Olver said he is taking “careful steps” to “encourage the building of affordable private housing for Croton people” and he cited “a pair of rather attractive buildings” at Riverside and Benedict as examples of how this was working. He specifically noted that prices in Croton were so high that teachers were forced to live in the snowy north of New York State, where roads were bad; so many teachers lived in the tundra that one day last year, the schools in Croton had to close due to lack of teachers. Mr. Olver said this was why “Croton needs good, affordable middle-class housing.”

By the May 9/15 issue of The Gazette, Mr. Olver said of those very same buildings: “I neither know nor care what the landlord wants to charge.”

In Croton the Board of Trustees says virtually nothing at public sessions, preferring to hold secret “Executive Sessions” and to set up a “Zoning Working Group” which does not even appear on the Croton village government webpage, let alone publish minutes. The lack of transparency is deliberate. READ MORE HERE.

1967, CROTON SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL "LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST"

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

At Everything Croton we try to answer requests whenever possible. But it can sometimes take a very long time! We had this newspaper image to the right filed under July 1967 and not the title--which is why it took forever to locate this Croton Shakespeare Festival production of "Love's Labour's Lost"!

Click on the photo, courtesy of the outstanding newspaper archives at The Croton Historical Society. (The photo caption: Lords arguing about the king's proclamation in Love's Labour's Lost are from left to right William Smith as Dumaine, Jonathan Kratter as the King of Navarre, David Shangold as the king's paige, and David Lewis as Berowne.)  And if you want to know more about the Croton Shakespeare Festival, you may have an interest in these  additional links:

LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR OF PURPLE MARTINS AT CROTON POINT PARK

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Back in 2017--Saw Mill River Audubon approached FEED THE BIRDS! with the hope of establishing a Purple Martin colony at Croton Point Park. Said FTB owner Rob Armanini: "So, we hooked them up with a premiere pole & gourd system"...(the shop  also donated a portion of the set-up).

Let it suffice to say that 2018 was a success! And 2019 is looking good--click on the photo--see more at Feed the Birds here and here.

Thank you SMRA, Feed the Birds, and the folks at Croton Point Park.

MEMORIAL DAY FLAGS

To those residents who have once again expressed disappointment that Croton has not hung any American flags in the Upper Village for Memorial Day (there are two on private property), you must take your complaints and comments directly to village staff/officials instead.  Contact info is at https://www.crotononhudson-ny.gov

Flags have, however, been hung elsewhere in the village.

JUST IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: BREAKING NEWS, KATZ PROPERTY--VILLAGE "IS INTERESTED IN DEVELOPING THE KATZ PROPERTY" AND REZONING IT TO ALLOW 3 STORY STRUCTURE

Thank you Croton United for the heads up: The Village “is interested in developing the Katz property” and rezoning it to allow a structure 3 stories tall, according to a report on a private meeting between Deputy Mayor Ann Gallelli and Bicycle Pedestrian Committee member Matthew Schuerman. Details of the discussion appear in the minutes of the Bicycle Pedestrian Committee meeting held on May 21, 2019. This appears to contradict public statements by Gallelli and other members of the board that there are no current plans to develop the Katz property.
