As always, some wonderful finds, oldies but goodies too, and more. Click on the photos and links.
We were chatting the other day about those "vintage" television shows we love to hate--The Brady Bunch ranked high on the list but it was a split decision on LOST IN SPACE...though all of us agreed that "The Robot" was our favorite character by far.

FIRST UP is a 1967 Lost In Space dome lunch box featured in a previous auction at Croton's own SeriousToyz.com - the graphics are killer. It's followed by a great 1960's Christmas publicity still for the show--as you can see there are no pine trees in space....

Next up, one of our favorite putz houses from Howard Lamey--so worth looking at again--The Three Peak Church Putz.

For plans and construction details--for everyone's private non-commercial use only.  Go here http://bit.ly/1PhhCBF

And finally an oldie but goodie--so beautiful--Sylvan's 2016 Christmas village under the tree.  Again, click on the photos and links.

Worth looking at again: Frozen in time—another white Christmas in Plasticville—wonderful vintage Plasticville pieces - wish they were still making them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aE-b8ty83Os

Hi Virginia from Verplank--you are one lucky gal--you have the FAMOUS NOMA ROCKET BUBBLE LIGHTS; you can see the 1962 catalog here http://bit.ly/1OWRRas

GALEF ET AL. - NY HAS MADE BIG CHANGES TO STAR REBATES--WHY LAWMAKERS HAVE HAD ENOUGH

NY has made big changes to STAR rebates. Why lawmakers have had enough--ALBANY - Enough already with the changes to the state’s STAR program!

That was the message this week from state lawmakers in the Hudson Valley, where property taxes are among the highest in the nation.

The popular STAR program now is a check for homeowners who earn between $250,000 and $500,000 a year.

And the state has made a series of other quiet adjustments in recent years to the yearly $3 billion program that gives homeowners a break on school taxes.

The annual tinkering with the program is creating confusion for homeowners and creating a headache for local tax assessors, who increasingly have less power over the program, state lawmakers said.

“We cannot continue to negotiate away this vital tax benefit year after year in the budget,” Assemblywoman Sandra Galef, D-Ossining, Westchester County, said in a statement. https://www.timestelegram.com/news/20191128/ny-has-made-big-changes-to-star-rebates-why-lawmakers-have-had-enough

REMEMBERING CARY GRANT

Who died this date in 1986...and who will always be DUDLEY the Angel from The Bishop's Wife as far as vintage Christmas people go....

Cary Grant (born Archibald Alexander Leach; January 18, 1904 – November 29, 1986) was a British-American actor, known as one of classic Hollywood's definitive leading men. He began a career in Hollywood in the early 1930s, and became known for his transatlantic accent, debonair demeanor, and light-hearted approach to acting and sense of comic timing. See the video from the work session here. Laws not passed...yet....village remains committed to re-zoning. Has all but abandoned retail very publicly.  Will keep you posted about the next meeting.

Editor's note: A stark contrast to how other Westchester communities are approaching things; check out Dobbs Ferry---their goal? To attract commerce, not housing.  READ MORE ABOUT THAT HERE.

MORE FABULOUS VINTAGE WEBSITES, FINDS, ETC. FROM EVERYTHING CROTON

As always, some wonderful finds, oldies but goodies and more. Click on the photos and links.

First up, two examples of "fringed" Christmas postcards, popular from the turn of the century to about 1910. (One set has been fashioned into a bookmark). Both courtesy of Mary Sophie. You don't see these too often with the fringe still intact. They're followed by a 1940's ad for Anchors Aweigh with Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and more. And finally one of or favorite Santa Claus figures by Jim Shore.

A few years ago, we acquired one of those old-fashioned punch bowl sets from the 40’s—with dreams of vintage egg nog recipes dancing in our heads; we’re happy to report the punch bowl has been out more often than most sets are...
One of our favorite holiday recipes comes from Family Christmas online for Cappuccino Punch – it's! You can see the recipe here. (Individual cups were also “enhanced” with a shot of Kahlua—heaven!)

BY SPECIAL REQUEST: NO LONGER ON THE MAP, FORGOTTEN PLACE NAMES IN NORTHWESTERN WESTCHESTER

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

TO THE RESIDENT LOOKING FOR AN ARTICLE "ABOUT OLD AREA NAMES" here at the blog, I believe you may be referring to this 2009 article by the late Robert Scott at his Postscripts blog:

No Longer on the Map: Forgotten Place Names in Northwestern Westchester

LOWER HUDSON VALLEY

In the beginning was the land, and it was without names. From somewhere over the horizon the first wanderers reached northwestern Westchester and found the land to be rich and good. They remained and gave names to places--descriptive names by which others could identify them. Thus, the Indian name for Ossining was "a stony place"; for Peekskill, "the mouth of a stream"; for Croton Point, "a point or ending." Indian names have had a greater persistence than is recognized. For example, 26 state names are of Indian derivation.

Next came the Dutch, doughty burghers and traders. Accustomed to sailing the inland channels of their own country, they stayed close to navigable waterways. A stream was a "kill" or "creek," a "gat" was a passage, a "hoek" was a point of land. But the Dutch were also intensely practical. They accepted the Indian place names they found, altering them slightly to sound more like their own tongue.

Then came the English. They converted many of the names applied by the Dutch: "kreek" became "creek," "bosch" (wood) became "bush," and "hoek" became "point." A lake or a pool became a "pond," a word common in eastern England. Although the English were comparative latecomers, they remained for the longest time. Rejecting many existing place names, they made them over to fit the English language, choosing the names of towns in England or notable persons. The newly minted United States continued this practice.

Soon the land became layered with names. Always lurking in the background, the old names were remembered and kept alive by old-timers. Eventually even they became only a memory. Now-forgotten names of places and people molder on old maps and documents in dusty archives or accumulate moss on old tombstones.

Although overlooked by latter-day cartographers, these intriguing old names need not be lost to us. Listed here from A to Z are a smattering of place names in northwestern Westchester that are "no longer on the map," with their modern equivalents. Maps used for verification were the appropriate topographic sheets of the 1:24,000 series prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Abram's Swimming Hole. At their home on Annsville Creek, two Negro brothers, William and Abraham Hallenback ('Uncle Abram') unselfishly taught generations of Peekskill youngsters to swim.

Auser's Flats. In Ossining; an area north of Cedar Lane, east of Route 9. It took its name from Joseph Auser, who lived on the west side of the Post Road.

Bakers Landing. An early name for Van Cortlandtville.

Bald Hill. In Peekskill; now Gallows Hill.

Barker Pond. In Cortlandt; named for Louis Barker, owner of the land around it in 1930. It is today called Cliffdale Pond.

Barlow's Hill. The hill where the Croton-Harmon High School now stands; it took its name from the Barlow house, a multifamily dwelling.

Bishop Rocks. At the Hudson River in Briarcliff Manor; named for John Bishop, who bought 83 acres south of Kemeys Cove from the Commissioners of Forfeiture after the Revolution. Now the site of a sewage treatment plant.

Boscobel. From 1857 to 1883, this was the name of the post office at Crugers. The name is from the stately home built by Staats Morris Dyckman and later dismantled to make way for the F.D.R. Veterans Hospital. One of the country's finest Federal-style homes, the house was moved to Garrison and painstakingly reconstructed. Fortunately, it had been carefully measured by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1932. Westchester's loss became Putnam County's gain.

The Bowery. The name of the temporary town along Route 129 during the building of the New Croton Dam. Emulating its New York City namesake, 11 of its 23 buildings were saloons. Boarding houses and bawdy houses made up most of the rest.

Camp of Military Instruction. Camp Smith's name from 1882 to 1926. It was renamed to honor the then Governor, Alfred Emanuel Smith, later an unsuccessful candidate for the presidency.

Canopus Creek. In Cortlandt; named for an Indian chief, it is now Sprout Brook.

Cat Hill. In Cortlandt, south of the Croton River; now Catamount Hill.

AGENDA, WORK SESSION 11/25, REZONING DISCUSSION FOR "AFFORDABLE HOUSING" CONTINUES & HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE GAZETTE, THE 11/18 PUBLIC HEARING CONTINUATION, PETITION INFO ETC.

November 25, 2019 at 7:30 PM--AGENDA--(INCIDENTALLY, THE RE-ZONING LAWS #9 AND #10 HAVE NOT YET BEEN VOTED ON).

A member of the Village Board will be joining via video conference at 6419 Sand Point Way, Seattle, WA 98115. Members of the public have the right to attend the meeting at any of the locations.

1. Discussion on Public Hearing comments and Village Planning Board/Westchester County Planning Board comments in relation to the proposed North Riverside Avenue/Municipal Place Gateway Area zoning updates.

******
THE GAZETTE--THIS WEEK'S ISSUE--PAGE 1 ARTICLE--ON THE LAST PUBLIC HEARING OF 11/18----POINTS OUT that other than board members, a huge majority opposed the rezoning either as res. + comm. OR 100% residential. Mentions comments from people on Wells Ave, etc. about their view--additionally OVERSIZED FOR THE PROPERTY CITING A HOUSE BEING BUILT ON GRAND ST. as an example, etc. As always you should read the article in its entirety.

There is also a fascinating letter from Mr. Pugh extolling that this plan goes way back, and among other things, how there would be climate change benefits since there would be less driving. Again, do read the letter in its entirety.

"SLEAZY GUTTER POLITICS? NOTHING NEW FOR CROTON"

November 23, 2019 The following letter was published in this week’s issue of the Gazette.

"SLEAZY GUTTER POLITICS? NOTHING NEW FOR CROTON"

To the editor:

“Let brown people in to rape our daughters in Westchester. Our white, blonde daughters.”

Sleazy gutter politics? Nothing new for Croton. This is a woke variant on the type of dog-whistle politics which is as old as the Ku Klux Klan.

For those people who thought that living in a one-party village would improve the level of civility, think again. As residents of Croton know, the quote above is from Croton resident Catherine Borgia—the senior politician of the Croton Democrats. Faced with token opposition, the Croton Democratic Party decided to make an example of the only person to contest a race.

So a few months ago, Ms. Borgia told an audience that back in 2017 her opponent had sent a mailer out claiming that Borgia wanted to let “brown”people in to rape “our white, blonde daughters.” She added that one of the children in the photograph looked like her child. In the wake of the success of this lie, Ms. Borgia doubled down with a statement on Facebook that her opponent “spent most of the last campaign calling me an ugly slut.”

When asked to produce the document, Ms. Borgia’s spokesperson said that she “had a recollection” of its existence and when asked point blank about the basis for her allegations, the response was: “her memory.”

2017 was just two years ago. In an age of cellphone video and YouTube, this would have been front-page news. Yet nothing exists, because it did not happen. So the Croton Democrats created alternative facts. Ms. Borgia had a recovered memory. Since she had a recovered memory of being victimized, it must be true. Those are the rules in 2019.

If in 2019 we still believed in objective reality, we would call Ms. Borgia a liar.

Of course, nobody really believes Ms. Borgia. But her decision to smear her opponent with such a vile charge was wildly popular in Croton, and she will remain in the county legislature until Ms. Galef vacates her seat for Ms. Borgia and the voters march to the polls to rubber-stamp her coronation.

Maria Trunzo Slippen is a former Croton trustee. Now that Croton has taken over the Cortlandt Dems, the toxic Croton style is now spreading to Cortlandt. Ms. Slippen holds that people who say Ms. Borgia lied are merely expressing an opinion, and she even said that this has been “positive press” for the opponent who was smeared.

If you ask anyone to define Croton, the first thing you will hear is that we are “progressive” and then you will hear about how we are so nice and neighborly to each other.

Those committees are required by county law, whereas other committees may be shaped by the chairman.

Other committee chairpersons will get between $3,000 and $6,000 apiece, and there’s a designation for “special committee” chairs who would get an additional stipend between $2,500 and $4,000.

A public hearing on the planned raises is set for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3, on the eighth floor of the Michaelian Office Building, 145 Martine Ave., White Plains.
