AND NOW A WORD FROM HUDSON VALLEY LIFESAVERS...

(EDITOR'S NOTE:  Luann Ricciardi is a lifelong Crotonite. For the past 10 years she has personally been training people to save lives by teaching them CPR/AED and First aid - the skills needed to respond in a cardiac emergency. Skills can save a life.)

Hudson Valley Lifesavers has been working with local school districts, businesses, golf courses, restaurants and childcare providers training staff members as well as family and friends in these lifesaving skills. No group is too big or too small. The thing that makes us unique is that you name the place and time and we will do the rest. We bring the training to you!!! We have trained families in the comfort of their own livingrooms as well as a gym full of coaches preparing for the upcoming athletic season. We will also be doing a demonstration class at the Croton Free Library in October that the community can come and join. We are even making a plan to come and train our senior citizens group!!  Check us out on Facebook for pictures from our latest trainings.

GOOD-BYE & GOOD LUCK TO HOLY NAME OF MARY'S PAT DENOTA

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

As some of you may know, Pat a.k.a. Patricia DeNota--parish secretary for Holy Name of Mary--will be leaving this week. She will be missed by one and all but especially by your editor because...

Pat is one of the best damn (oops!) secretaries I have met in years!  And just a really nice person too...did I mention she is a consummate professional as well--efficient too--all fine qualities that one rarely encounters in the "business" world these days...

And so...perhaps the Irish say it best:

May love and laughter light your days, and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours, wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons bring the best to you and yours!

Good-bye and Good Luck!

COMING SOON: MEET THE NEW SECRETARY @ HOLY NAME OF MARY

THE CROTON VILLAGE GARDEN CLUB STRIKES AGAIN...THE FLAGPOLE ON THE WATERFRONT

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Once again, many thanks to the CROTON VILLAGE GARDEN CLUB for their efforts to beautify and maintain the village's neglected properties.

And now a word from Richard Zumbach; click on the photos, all rights reserved:

The club has been busy as usual and last week finished the planting at the Croton Landing flagpole.

Croton Landing is probably the nicest park on the Hudson, and now the entrance way looks fantastic with this completed garden.  Thanks to Molly and others for their work on the design and for the planting of the many plants.  Your ideas are always welcome, and from the gardens we have planted and maintained over the last couple of years,  Croton is becoming a more attractive village for all of us to enjoy.

Our next meeting will be in September. Trust you are enjoying the summer. Until then, making Croton beautiful, one garden at a time...

REMEMBERING S.S. KRESGE STORES @ CHRISTMAS

Yes, it's true. We miss the old five and dime stores--and never more so than at Christmas.

While we here in the Northeast often think Woolworth's, our readers just as often tell us about S.S. Kresge Stores out in the Midwest.....

Kresge’s original stores sold a wide selection of goods for 10 cents or less. Later stores included items for a price up to one dollar, and after World War II the company expanded into large discount stores in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada.

You can read more Kresge history here: http://www.britannica.com/biography/S-S-Kresge

Anyway...in our recent haul of vintage magazines from the Peekskill Attic Treasures Flea Market -- held on Sundays from 9 am more or less to late afternoon depending on the weather --  were quite a few full page Christmas ads for the stores, something we had never seen before!

Of course, we have to share. All of these are from the early 1920's.

Click on the photos and enjoy this slice of by-gone Americana.

SOMETHING GOOD IN THE WORLD'S NEWSLETTER SAYS THEY ARE NO LONGER ON GOUVEIA PROPERTY

FROM THE SOMETHING GOOD IN THE WORLD NEWSLETTER: After the unexpected news that our Children’s Peaceful Garden and environmental education programs were not going to be considered for the park we’d originally planned on in Croton-on-Hudson, we were incredibly lucky to find a new home for our chickens, gardens, and Earth School farm-based education programs.

http://www.somethinggoodintheworld.org/imgs/DigitalNews_4_2%281%29.pdf

On page 5 of the pdf link above -- Laurel Gouveia is thanked: The issue of the newsletter "is dedicated to the loving memory of Laurel Gouveia and her expressed wish and vision of her home and garden being used for environmental education, for children and families of all walks of life. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: VIOLET RAYS!

Everything Croton continues its very popular series GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN....and so without further ah-doo...YOU TOO CAN ENJOY THE ROAD TO HEALTH WITH....VIOLET RAYS! Click on the photo of an ad for VI-REX VIOLET RAYS, 1922.

Yes...once upon a time...A violet ray is an antique medical appliance used during the early 20th century in the obsolete medical therapy called electrotherapy. Their construction usually feature a combination of a disruptive discharge coil with an interruptor to apply a high voltage, high frequency, and low current to the human body for therapeutic purposes. Their basic construction was invented by Nikola Tesla prior to 1900, who introduced their first prototypes at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. Most of the antique violet rays in the US were produced before theDepression era and some of the larger US manufacturers of violet rays were Renulife, Fitzgerald and Fisher. You can read more here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violet_ray

Needless to say they promised more than they delivered!
