CLAIRE'S WEEKLY LETTER: PUNISHED FOR TRUTH-SEEKING: COFNAS, THE ARDAY AFFAIR AND NOW THE AMBASSADOR STEPS UP

For observers of academia, the Jason Arday affair has been thoroughly depressing. The exposure of absent standards inside Cambridge, the relentless coverage that followed, and then Arday's death, have made for a sequence of events that has been emotionally draining. It has been compounded by the backlash against the British press and against the scholar who set the chain in motion: the American philosopher and Quillette contributor Nathan Cofnas.

What began as an exposé of the collapse in standards produced by DEI—the ideology of diversity, equity and inclusion—has become a case of whistleblower retaliation. Cofnas has received death threats. He has been targeted personally by protesters in London, among them a sitting MP. And this week he was suspended from his post at Ghent University, pending a disciplinary investigation, after blowing the whistle on Arday and on Cambridge. I can confirm that he has been fearful for his safety.

In the days since Arday's death, there has been no public apology and no acknowledgement from Cambridge's leadership of the part it played in elevating an unqualified man into a position of precariousness and public scrutiny. The only scholar to face professional consequences is the one who exposed the truth. I am not the only one to notice the irony: the profession whose raison d'être is the pursuit of truth has punished a man for pursuing it. What is at stake in all of this is the legitimacy of academia itself.

Now the affair has escalated again, into something close to a diplomatic incident. Cofnas is an American scholar, and on 21 August the US Ambassador to Belgium, Bill White, published the following statement---click on the image

The New York Times was defeated in a defamation lawsuit Thursday brought by a former college basketball player and ordered to pay millions in damages.

An Alabama jury ruled that The Times defamed Kai Spears, then an 18-year-old freshman walk-on basketball player for the University of Alabama's Crimson Tide, who was swept up in a 2023 report linking him to a fatal shooting. After a nine-day trial, the eight-person jury determined that Spears was owed $9.25 million in damages. (CNN) – A 35-year-old woman has been charged in connection with a plot to use an explosive device to attack the New York State Capitol and state senators, officials said Thursday.

Jessica Bowie, who had pledged allegiance to ISIS, was arrested by FBI agents Wednesday after buying what she believed to be an explosive device and stating “her desire to carry out an attack at the New York State Capitol,” said Craig Tremaroli, FBI special agent in charge of the Albany field office.

She has been charged with one count of attempting to provide material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization, ISIS, said John Sarcone, the First Assistant US Attorney for the Northern District of New York. ETHICS ALARMS -- THAT MEDIAN STRATEGIES "EXPERIMENT"--JACK MARSHALL

 

This tears it for me, I think. I’m not paying attention to any polls from anyone or anywhere, ever.

I don’t know why anyone ever would, except, well, you know. Most people are stupid and gullible with flat learning curves, and our political parties and the news media depend on it.

A supposed polling organization called Median Strategies released a poll before the Wisconsin gubernatorial race that showed Democratic Socialist whack job Francesca Hong with a lead of more than 20 percentage points. Hong lost, and it wasn’t all that close either. Another Median Strategies poll this month showed Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass leading City Councilwoman Nithya Raman by nearly 12 percentage points ahead of the November mayoral runoff. Bass was apparently ecstatic, declaring on social media, “Doing the work, showing up, and gaining momentum. Let’s do this, LA!”

On Monday, the company acknowledged on its website that it had produced the fake polls as a”short-term social experiment examining how purported polling information could enter and spread through the political information ecosystem without independent verification.”

Oh! That’s all right then! No, it’s not, and I don’t care what the alleged justification for releasing fake polls was. The incident proves one thing, and one thing only: we can’t trust polling organizations, we can’t trust polls, we can’t trust the news stories that cite polls (Trump’s support among Hispanics drops 50!” was a headline this week…I bet they polled illegal immigrants).....MORE AT The Median Strategies “Experiment” | Ethics Alarms

TYLER ROBINSON--DEFENSE ATTORNEYS SEEK TO BLOCK TRIAL IN CHARLIE KIRK ASSASSINATION CASE---DERAIL DEATH PENALTY

Utah prosecutors are urging a judge to send Tyler Robinson to trial on every charge in the killing of Charlie Kirk, arguing that the evidence against him is overwhelming and pushing back against the defense's effort to take the potential death penalty off the table.

In a 19-page filing Tuesday, prosecutors responded to a defense brief asking Judge Tony Graf to throw out the sole aggravating factor that could expose Robinson to the death penalty. The defense has argued prosecutors failed to show that the shooting created a great risk of death to anyone other than Kirk. AN OPEN LETTER TO THE MAYOR, BOT AND VILLAGE MANAGER

An open letter to the Mayor, BOT and village manager,

Your proposed domestic and farm animal laws would clearly make it illegal for one to house small pet reptiles and amphibians in tanks in the house because they have a very small piece of property and many people are certainly not fifty feet from the property line in any direction.

Please explain if the village would come after people for fish, reptiles, amphibians, rabbits or Guinea pigs living in enclosures inside the home if they are closer than fifty feet away from a property line. Many neighbors and residents here keep these types of small animals which are perfectly legal to own and can be purchased at most pet stores and the Reptile Show that happens 4-6 times a year at the Westchester County Center with much enthusiasm.

I highly recommend you remove the section in your proposed law (see below) as many people all over Croton and Westchester County own and enjoy these pets. It’s ridiculous and highly restrictive. It’s also totalitarian and just because members of the BOE don’t own reptiles or small animals like this doesn’t mean they should attempt to ban them legally from small homes or apartments. These animals bring people much joy. Why would you want to attempt to take that away especially when they are legal to own and are commonly owned.

Please change or throw out your proposed law.

Does the village plan on coming into people’s personal homes, bedrooms and private spaces and measuring out the property lines from a tanked animal’s enclosures? If they are closer than fifty feet from the property line, will they then be made to remove or kill the animal to comply with this nonsensical village law?

Who dreams up these poorly written laws designed to punish people for no reason?

§230-40 J. Keeping of Animals--(1) the keeping of domestic animals for individual domestic purposes or as pets, provided that no domestic animals, except dogs or cats, shall be penned or housed within 50 feet of any lot line.
