Garden
Railroading with Toy Trains---I first wrote this article in 2007, and
updated it significantly in 2012. But so many things have changed since
then, it deserves another update. The short version is that you CAN use
toy trains on a garden railroad, as long as you choose carefully, and
are willing to put in the other work you need to do to make the railroad
sturdy and attractive.
Now for the biggest change: in 2012,
most of the larger toy trains available ran on the same gauge of track
used by LGB, Piko, and other name-brand garden trains (45mm, or 1.775").
But in 2019, one of the most popular big toy train lines did NOT run on
the same track. READ MORE HERE.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s decision Tuesday to include travelers from DC
in his 14-day quarantine order at first seemed great news: What a fine
way to keep Sen. Chuck Schumer, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the
rest out of most mischief for two weeks at a time. Alas, the gov left the congressfolks free to maximize their
destructive work: As “essential workers,” lawmakers are exempt from the
mandate that mere mortals must obey, on pain of persecution from the
State Police. READ AND SEE MORE AT https://nypost.com/2020/07/30/andrew-cuomos-missed-quarantine-opportunity/

Extensively detailed journalism - Nike should quit lecturing on social justice — and atone for using slave labor in China--Woke companies are constantly hectoring America on its failings. The Social Justice Warriors who run Nike, for example, pompously inform us that they are fighting “against discrimination in communities worldwide.” Not only that but they are “work[ing] every day to erase the stain of racism and the damage of injustice.” READ MORE AT https://nypost.com/2020/07/25/nike-should-quit-lecturing-on-social-justice-and-atone-for-using-slave-labor-in-china/

IT'S BAGPIPE APPRECIATION DAY! READ MORE ABOUT IT HERE.
AND CLICK ON THE PHOTOS FROM THE 2009 CROTON SUMMERFEST FEATURING LOCAL 21 N.Y. PIPES & DRUMS!
Originally
pastoral and festive, the military began using the bagpipe in the
eighteenth century and accompanied it with drums. Battlefields were
loud, so instruments were used to communicate.
Bagpipers from clans—who
were often at war with each other—would inspire soldiers before battle,
and played during battles to signal movements, attacks, and retreats.
When the Scottish uprising of 1745 failed, military training was banned. Thus, the bagpipe could no longer be used in this context anymore,
although it was not banned for other uses.
In the Scottish
Lowlands, pipers held important positions in communities. There were
town pipers, and those who played dance music and songs at weddings,
feasts, and fairs. The soft sounding Scottish Lowland bagpipe was played
from about 1750 to 1850; it had a bellows, and three drones in one
stock.
When England and Scotland united in the early eighteenth
century, bagpipes were brought all over the world to British colonies,
to places such as Africa and Ceylon.

Gov.
Andrew Cuomo’s Freudian slip may have shown Friday when he nearly
referred to himself as “President Cuomo.”“Why didn’t you listen to
President — Andrew — Cuomo,” the governor
was forced to quickly correct himself, “when he said 11 times there were
other states that have Green Lights Laws?”
Cuomo made the comment during a coronavirus press briefing in Albany
while discussing the federal government’s abandonment of a lawsuit
banning New Yorkers from being included in the federally run Trusted
Traveler programs. READ MORE HERE.

First up, we love finding old recipes for Christmas punch and holiday drinks; these Canada Dry concoctions below are from 1962. In truth, ginger ale really only came into our house during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. It was considered very "adult". We were permitted a toasting "cocktail" which consisted of ginger ale, lots of crushed ice, a maraschino cherry and a lemon twist in a highball glass!
They're followed by another Christmas tree photo with an extraordinary putz village--an oldie but goodie and worth a second look....
Circa 1918 to 1928--courtesy of LOC and sliced and diced so you can appreciate all the vintage village goodness-including the train, boat & fence. This was a labor of love for sure! And finally a page from the 1926 Eatons's showing candy boxes and stockings. Again, click on the photos and links.
