AN OUTSTANDING ALBUM OF CLOVIS STAR CHOCOLATE CARDS, NEW FROM OUR FRIENDS AT EFSP

We love old movie star photo albums, cigarette cards and scrapbooks...and while we have seen a few of these CLOVIS STAR CHOCOLATE CARDS over the years at the Beacon Flea Market, we have never seen this many!

And now from our friends at European Film Star Postcards---an outstanding find...New Amit Benyovits acquisition: Clovis Star Chocolate Cards....

In 2012, collector Amit Benyovits started our love for Massilia collectors cards. Last week he sent me scans of a new acquisition, a series of 50 'Premium' collectors cards from Belgium.

The cards were produced for Chocolaterie Clovis in Pepinster, and while Belgium is a bilingual country, the texts on the flip sides of the cards are both in French (the language spoken in Wallonia) and in Dutch (spoken in Flanders).

The cards were printed in Italy by Bromofoto in Milan, and the portrayed stars are all well known Hollywood movie actors. Read and see much more of the Clovis collection here

SILENT SCREEN FILM STAR FLORENCE LA BADIE, SOPE HILL, THE CROTON CONNECTION

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

INTERESTING STORY IN THE YORK, PA DAILY RECORD--- YORK DAILY RECORD: MYSTERY WOMAN IN THE YORK BUILT COUPE

Florence La Badie was a famous silent firm star that received a customized York built Pullman Deluxe Coupe in 1916. La Badie’s publicity photo, via Pinterest, is from the height of her career in that same time frame.....On August 28, 1917, La Badie was driving near Ossining, New York, when she swerved on Sope Hill in Croton-on-Hudson to avoid a collision with several trucks at 6:30 PM and went down a steep embankment. She was taken to the hospital in Ossining and.....READ MORE HERE

MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: HOWARD DA SILVA, ALLEN FUNT and JACKIE GLEASON

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: HOWARD DA SILVA, ALLEN FUNT and JACKIE GLEASON. Click on the photos and links.

First up, Croton's Howard Da Silva in The Blue Dahlia, a 1946 American crime film and film noir, directed by George Marshall based on an original screenplay by Raymond Chandler. With Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake.  Da Silva played Eddie Harwood, the owner of the Blue Dahlia nightclub on the Sunset Strip. READ MORE HERE.

Next up, a little blurb about Croton's Allen Funt and Candid Camera from TV Radio Mirror 1962.

Funt credited his success to the fact that he "looks like an average Joe."

And finally from 1958, TV & Radio Mirror, A QUICK BLURB--frequent Croton visitor, Jackie Gleason and his return to television in assorted productions.

Among these is Playhouse 90's "Time of Your Life"---and a mention of his recently completed album, A Tale of Two Cities....

It also mentions how he gave up his Manhattan penthouse for his suburban mansion...

Of course they're talking about his famous round house---currently on the market for twelve million---and for a real treat, the Journal News has 66 photos of the house online

(p.s. The 1958 article incorrectly identifies Gleason's house as being in Peekskill when it is actually in Cortlandt Manor.)

NEW FROM EFSP, PHOTO BY MARTIN BADEKOW

New from our friends at European Film Star Postcards: PHOTO BY MARTIN BADEKOW

The work of German photographer Martin Badekow (1896–1983) has been overlooked for a long time, but his photographs from the Berlin cabarets have become emblematic images of Weimar Germany. Vintage prints by Badekow are auctioned today for hundreds of dollars, but you can still find Ross Verlag postcards with his glamour portraits of film stars for the price of a bus fare. MORE FABULOUS VINTAGE WEBSITES, FINDS, ETC. FROM EVERYTHING CROTON

With many thanks to Heather, AN OLDIE BUT GOODIE, we once again share this vintage Christmas card from the Hughes Family--believed to be from the late1940's, early 50's. Complete with bottle brush trees, a billboard and what we believe are Barclay figures! It's the first "putzy" Christmas card we've ever seen.

It's followed by a  great ad from 1919 for Charms Candy--Trim your tree with Charms! And from the 1920 Montgomery Ward Christmas catalog, White Polar Talking Teddy Bears and more! Click on the photos. Enjoy!

p.s. AN UPDATE FROM DC--ABOUT THE "PHOTO CHRISTMAS CARD"--
The wonderful Christmas card shared by Heather might be a bit earlier than late 1940s. The prominently shown toy car is a pre-war only LaSalle made by Hubley. They changed the car slightly for post war production.  The car itself measures about 7 inches overall and has nickel plated separate headlamp pods. It is the last Hubley toy to feature nickel plated components.  It happens to be one of my favorite toys and I buy every one I can on eBay. They don’t show up often.  I have at least one that is really over restored with chrome foil on the bumpers and grille and very shiny red paint that could pass for the one in Heather’s card. The post war Cadillac version was in production much longer.

ROMEO AND JULIET 1954 - THE LATEST FROM EFSP

New from our friends at European Film Star Postcards--Renato Castellani's film adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (1954) has somehow fallen into a hole in film history. Despite a handsome production with some worthy performances, it is overshadowed by Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet (1968) with Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey, and even the Hollywood version, Romeo and Juliet (George Cukor, 1936) with Norma Shearer and Leslie Howard. (Click on the postcard for Laurence Harvey and Susan Shentall).  Read and see more here.

Next up, famous suffragette Inez Milholland, one of Croton's Original Bohemians, via THE DAY BOOK 1916--HOW LEAP YEAR GIRL SHOULD PROPOSE--AS TOLD BY FAMOUS SUFFRAGETTE WHO DID

AND....In his CHRONICLES OF CROTON'S BOHEMIANS, the late historian Robert Scott wrote this about Milholland:

On March 3, 1913, a statuesque woman clad in a flowing white cape and riding a white horse was the leader of a giant women's suffrage parade down Washington’s Pennsylvania Avenue.

She carried a streaming banner reading, "Forward into light."

Not quite 27 years old, Inez Milholland already had an impressive record of accomplishments.

GAZETTE LETTER FROM McKEON OUTLINES CONCERNS ABOUT VIILLAGE MANAGER'S CONTRACT

Residents may have an interest in a letter to the Gazette from Croton resident John McKeon.  Mr. McKeon, who spent 40 years in human resources leadership roles in the private sector, has reviewed the contemplated contract for village manager.  He expressed grave concerns about the contract, as well as the Board of Trustees understanding of their fiduciary responsibility. He adds that the proposed village manager's contract in light of the $300,000 defalcation associated with our fire department is also of concern.

Residents should read his ENTIRE letter in the 7/19 edition of the paper. The Gazette is on sale just about everywhere.

NEXT UP, from reformed socialist and Croton's Max Eastman, a 1947 article (The New Castle Tribune) from his days at Readers Digest.

For those who don't know, Eastman recanted much of his younger Socialist leanings.  By the mid-1950's, he had come to believe that the Bolshevik Revolution "rather than producing freedom, produced the most perfect tyranny in all history".

Also in 1955, he became one of the original contributing editors of the conservative National Review magazine. He also wrote a number of books and articles on the nature of American humor.

Eastman's last memoir was Love and Revolution: My Journey Through an Epic (1964). In 1969, he died at his summer home in Bridgetown, Barbados at the age of 86

Ellen (Mearsheimer) McDonald went with God this past Saturday July 14, 2018. After having bravely battled cholangiocarcinoma for 18 months, she passed peacefully in the arms of her husband Tim, her daughters, Caroline and Megan and her brother TJ at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ. Ellen leaves all of us broken-hearted but we are strengthened by the many wonderful memories she has left behind.

Born on October 10, 1961 at Phelps Hospital in Tarrytown, NY to Col Thomas Mearsheimer and Ruth (Baumann) Mearsheimer, Ellen grew up in Croton-On Hudson, NY. The Mearsheimer Family was a pillar in the Tarrytown community for decades and, being the youngest of five, Ellen left a lasting mark on her hometown. A VISIT TO THE VERPLANCK PRESERVE AND NATURE TRAILS

Another beautiful morning in the Hudson Valley.....today a visit to the recently completed Verplanck Preserve and Nature Trails---a hop, skip and a jump from the Town of Cortlandt's Veterans Memorial Park.

First up, a stop at the Croton Dunkin Donuts for their latest offering: BROWN SUGAR COLD BREW.  Outstanding! No artificial flavors, naturally flavored brown sugar syrup added to the brand’s popular Cold Brew coffee.  Now it's sweet--be prepared--but the taste of the coffee itself is enhanced--in your editor's humble opinion.  It will only be around for the summer.

Ten minutes later by car, we were in the Verplanck Nature Preserve; it's a small preserve, but serene. There's a gravel and dirt parking area, a quiet lake--and a very wild pond that changes size with the seasons.  There's a small deck for observing fish, bullfrogs, morning reflections, the occasional heron and water snake.   In fact, the entire preserve is very wild, but flat, easy to walk, quiet, and a step back in time.

Follow the rules to keep it that way--and stick to the well-defined  trails--that includes your four-legged family members.

You'll be rewarded with wild flowers and seldom seen birds and butterflies...and you'll avoid the poison ivy and other less friendly critters who also call this place home.  Click on the photos.
