BESSIE BROWNING, "THE VIVACITY GIRL", HER HARMON-ON-THE-HUDSON CONNECTION

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

For many years, the old-timers tell stories of the assorted "vaudevillians" who made the then-Harmon section of Croton their home.  Some of them achieved a more than modest degree of fame, if not here, than often abroad.

(Click on the photos and links.)

One of these was Bessie Browning, also known as THE VIVACITY GIRL---and not to be confused with THE ORIGINAL BESSIE BROWNING, a blues singer.

THE VIVACITY GIRL was known for her comedy and "mimicry" of the "rich and sometimes famous".

According to Vaudeville America, she didn't quite "catch on here"; you can read more about that at http://vaudevilleamerica.org/performance/bessie-browning-5/

Not much more is known about Browning's time here---or where exactly in Harmon she lived---but the Everything Croton Elves will be looking---and presenting more forgotten village Vaudeville troopers when and if they are "re-discovered".

Copies have been sent to THE CROTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY.

  1. This was so cool. My dad said that some famous vaudeville "horn player" lived in Harmon for about two years and died under questionable circumstances. I'll try to remember more. Do you have anything about this?
