MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS AND PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES GLORIA SWANSON, HANANIAH HARARI, AND PETER FRAMPTON

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS AND PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES GLORIA SWANSON, HANANIAH HARARI, AND PETER FRAMPTON....

CLICK ON THE PHOTOS AND LINKS.

First up, a quick 1925 burb that mentions Gloria Swanson, the film Madame Sans Gene, and her "farm near Croton-on-Hudson".   You can read more about Swanson and her Croton connection here.  You can read more about Madame Sans Gene here

That's followed by an 1919 ad for Hermo "Hair-Lustr" featuring a very young Swanson and....

Wallace Reid.  While the "old-timers" here often claimed that he spent time in "Harmon", (he rented a cottage allegedly), we've never been able to find any written reference....for those who don't know,  Reid was an American actor in silent film, referred to as "the screen's most perfect lover". He also had a brief career as a racing driver and a tragic end.

Read more about him here.

As some of you may know, HANANIAH HARARI was one of the village's most notable residents. Your editor's interest was renewed when it was discovered that one of our favorite Coca-Cola ads was by Harari!

It's from 1949--LOVE THE SHADOW!

For those who don't know, Harari--born Richard Falk Goldman---was a well known artist and teacher.  In the 1940s he produced artwork for the covers of magazines, including Fortune. He also contributed cartoons to The New Masses, which led to his being blacklisted (or in today's parlance, CANCELLED) in the 1950s during the McCarthy era.  Using his gifts for Realism, he became a successful portrait painter affiliated with Portraits, Inc. One of his portraits is in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. Harari taught at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan from 1974 to 1990, and at the Art Students League from 1984 to 1999, where most of his classes were filled to capacity. He stopped teaching when he could no longer see. With the Reagan presidency, his political leanings became increasingly conservative. A patriot to the end, and per his request, his coffin was draped with the American flag. And finally, as many of you know, rock star Peter Frampton did indeed live right outside Croton and was a frequent visitor to our village. (Grand Union, Pizza and Brew, Elmer Suds, to name just a few).  You can read more about that from 1979 here.

We came across another Flickr photo album for a Frampton concerts---this one is for the 2012 FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE 35TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR----from J.J. Hancock--see it at https://www.flickr.com/photos/jjhancock/albums/72157629561275499
