THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA, MGM, 1954, ONE FOR THE BUCKET LIST

John the Count, our resident authority on everything 1950's, reminds us that....

ON THIS DAY IN 1954 "The Barefoot Contessa" directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, starring Ava Gardner and Humphrey Bogart premiered at the Capitol.  CLICK ON THE PHOTOS AND LINKS.

While there have been the latest nonsensical demands to "cancel" this movie for whatever reasons are fashionable with  the mob this week, your editor highly recommends it for your bucket list. There's solid direction, universal and still relevant themes in today's world, and some really fabulous acting.

The film centers around the life and loves of fictional Spanish sex symbol Maria Vargas. It stars Humphrey Bogart, Ava Gardner, and Edmond O'Brien. The plot is focused on social positioning and high-powered politics within the world of film and high society. For his performance, O'Brien won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and the corresponding Golden Globe. Mankiewicz was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

There's also a strong and effective performance later in the film by Rossano Brazzi, of THREE COINS IN A FOUNTIAN FAME, ROME ADVENTURE AND SOUTH PACIFIC fame to name just a few.
