AND NOW... SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: GLORIA SWANSON, LEE HAYS, AND MAX EASTMAN

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

One of our most popular series here at the blog.....click on the photos and links.

AND NOW... SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: GLORIA SWANSON, LEE HAYS

As many of you know, Gloria Swanson was one of Croton's most notable residents (see her Croton home here).

Just started reading GLORIA AND JOE--by Axel Madsen--THE STAR CROSSED LOVE AFFAIR OF GLORIA SWANSON AND JOE KENNEDY (yes THAT Joe Kennedy).

It's definitely a page turner with some references to her time in Croton....

SAYS PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY BOOKS: Madsen...details the love affair that began when Boston banker Joseph Kennedy met the screen star in 1927 and how they became partners in Gloria Swanson Productions, which they expected to make cinema history and huge profits. READ MORE ABOUT IT AT PW BOOKS HERE.

Next up, a 1959 ad for a FOLK SONG KIT FROM CROTON'S  LEE HAYS----of The Weavers fame--and by way of Electra Records and Sing Out magazine.

Hays lived on Memory Lane here in Croton.

Read more about Hays and his Croton connection here.

As many of you know, Max Eastman was one of Croton's most notable residents -- a recanted radical, prolific writer, and so much more. (READ AND SEE MORE ABOUT EASTMAN HERE.)

There's quite a bit about Eastman in the book UP FROM COMMUNISM by John P. Diggins---it's described this way:

Through the fascinating odyssey of four American radicals who became spokesmen for the Right — Max Eastman, John Dos Passos, Will Herberg and James Burnham — this elegant and brilliant book illumines the puzzling, often tortured relationship of the intellectual to politics, the temptations of communism that seduced many American intellectuals in the twenties and thirties, and  the temptations of conservatism which lured them when their god had failed.

The book is well worth your time--Available on AMAZON.

  1. Eastman's epiphany is a thing to behold. He became a true conservative champion yet still retained, as many of us do, true liberal leanings. Just without the chaos and destruction that communism and its weaker, but no less dangerous, sister socialism
