REGARDING THOSE RUMORS ABOUT MASKS, RIOTER IDENTIFICATION, AND POSSIBLE SUSPENSION

As many of you know, local social media has been ablaze with calls for mask usage to be suspended at once as identification of looters/rioters/protestors is often difficult under the best of circumstances--but doubly difficult at present.

To date, mask usage remains mandatory per the governor when social distance cannot be maintained (OR EXEMPT IF YOU ARE UNDER THE AGE OF TWO OR HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION).

The issue is, however, receiving widespread attention across the country...here's just one example...excerpted---read the entire article at the link provided.  If the issue changes, credible information will certainly be posted.

CLEVELAND DOT COM----It’s already hard to identify criminals caught on surveillance video. Experts say masks make it even harder.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Trying to determine someone’s identity from surveillance footage isn’t easy. It’s not unusual for Northeast Ohio police departments to post surveillance footage of a suspect of a crime, asking, “Can you identify this person?”

And wearing a mask – whether to conceal identity, protect against the coronavirus or both – makes the task much more difficult.

“You really don’t see a lot of people being arrested after large events [like a protest] are over,” said Michael Benza, an attorney and law instructor at Case Western Reserve University. “If you’re not arrested during the event, you’re probably not going to get arrested at all.”

Ahead of Saturday’s rally for justice in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams welcomed demonstrators to participate but urged them to wear masks as protection from the coronavirus.

Vandalism and looting rocked downtown Cleveland Saturday night, as a peaceful rally turned violent. In an early Sunday morning press conference, Williams said investigators would check surveillance video from around the city to identify the individuals who caused the damage.

“We’re going to do everything we can to bring people to justice who took part in the destruction in downtown today," he said. But with many of their faces camouflaged, how easy could that be?
