MORE FABULOUS VINTAGE WEBSITES, FINDS, ETC. FROM EVERYTHING CROTON

As always, some oldies but goodies, special requests, fab finds, etc.  Click on the photos and links.

First up, Christmas decorations from the 1919 Sears catalog--BUT IN COLOR--swoon--gasp--love those prices--and want dozens of each of course! We're also somewhat intrigued by the listing for "Japanese Decorative Fiber Roping"--wonder if it had any relation to the 'coconut' texture they used on putz houses?  The catalog pages are followed by a 1969 ad for the Kodak Instamatic--with flash cubes!  Again, click on the photos and links

And now a wonderful oldie but goodie and so worth looking at again. Tom's "piano houses"; wonderful vintage putz houses--some very unique examples--and some superb restorations too---not to mention a neat tiny vintage train--see it all at http://www.cardboardchristmas.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=766

Tutorial: Art texture using crumbled wax paper and glue; the music is kind of annoying so you might want to turn the volume down; click here

Tutotial:  Another great art texture and a fab way to re-use cellophane, plastic wrap and bags (your editor loves this and uses it a lot on small furniture pieces, cardboard projects, and more)  There are NO single use plastic bags in a crafter's home! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gyi_Iq83Zg

HORST BUCHHOLZ, THE JAMES DEAN OF THE GERMAN CINEMA

We watched the 1961 film--FANNY--again recently---and were reminded how wonderful the entire cast was--from Leslie Caron to Maurice Chevalier to....HORST BUCHHOLZ....

And so....courtesy of European Film Star Postcards: Horst ‘Hotte’ Buchholz (1933-2003) was the James Dean of the German Cinema. He was often type casted as a rebellious teenager in the late 1950s. Horst appeared in over sixty films between 1952 and 2002 and is now best remembered as the Mexican gunfighter Chico in The Magnificent Seven (1960).

DRIVER PLUMMETS 75 FEET NEAR CROTON DAM, RIVER

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

LOHUD/CORTLANDT - A driver walked away with minor injuries after plummeting about 75 feet down a hill and coming to rest within feet of the Croton River on Sunday, officials said. The driver was traveling on Route 129, near the Croton Dam, around 12:30 p.m. and crashed while avoiding another driver, the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department said in a Facebook post.  More at https://www.lohud.com/story/news/local/westchester/cortlandt/2019/10/28/driver-plummets-off-route-129-croton-dam-river/2484104001/

BRIAN PUGH'S LETTER IN THIS WEEK'S GAZETTE

Mr. Pugh has a letter in the most recent edition of The Gazette concerning the board's plans for the massive apartment/mixed use re-zoning of the Katz/North Riverside area.  The letter lays out--in clear unmistakable terms--what the board's decision and plans are--and have always been.  However, you are encouraged to read it and form your own conclusions.  Mr. Pugh also claims the rezoning has broad consensus with public sentiment and is consistent with Croton's most recent Comprehensive Plan. The Gazette is on sale just about everywhere. Stay tuned for "public hearing" information, post election.

FROM THE CROTON ON HUDSON EMERGENCY SERVICES FB PAGE: It’s not everyday we get visitors at our HQ. However today we had a very special guest stop in to say “Hello”. Tessa Wolfert a little girl one of our CEMS crews helped deliver stopped in 7 years later to say thank you to our crew for being there that day. On October 22,2012 we responded to a female in active labor. Little did our crew know they’d be delivering a healthy beautiful baby girl in a black out!! Pictured are Tessa with EMT Pimentel and the goodies she brought with her! Thank you Tessa!! We will enjoy every bite!

MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: LENORE ULRIC, LORRAINE HANSBERRY, GLORIA SWANSON, AND PETER STRAUSS

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: LENORE ULRIC, LORRAINE HANSBERRY, GLORIA SWANSON, AND PETER STRAUSS.

Click on the photos and links.

First up, from Photoplay Magazine 1929, A SMALL CLIPPING--Croton notable Lenore Ulric is married in the village to her former leading man, Sydney Blackmer.

Blackmer is remembered for his more than a dozen portrayals of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and for his memorable role as Roman Castevet in the Academy Award-winning 1968 film, Rosemary's Baby.  Read more about him here.

Read and see more about actress Ulric and her Croton connection here.

Next up, Croton notable and famous playwight, Lorraine Hansberry, author of A RAISIN IN THE SUN...Here's a link to an interesting article....

Lorraine Hansberry on Depression and Its Most Reliable Antidote--“I am sitting here… feeling cold, useless, frustrated, helpless, disillusioned, angry and tired.”

READ AND SEE MORE HERE, COURTESY OF BRAINPICKINGS.

Next, perhaps Croton's most famous notable, Gloria Swanson, in a 1930 blurb for WHAT A WIDOW.  Swanson returned to her slapstick roots in this one.

What a Widow! was a 1930 American pre-Code romantic comedy film directed by Allan Dwan and produced by and starring Gloria Swanson

The film was produced by Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. and received generally positive reviews and was noted for its animated title sequence created by William Dietz, but was met with lukewarm returns at the box office.  READ MORE ABOUT IT HERE.

And finally, spoilers alert, a blog posting from GO RETRO about Croton's Peter Strauss in Rich Man, Poor Man--books one and two.
