AT LAST, ALERT CENTER: HOSPITALS TO CHANGE HOW THEY COUNT PEOPLE ADMITTED FOR COVID-19

Finally......in New York.....

ALERT CENTER: HOSPITALS TO CHANGE HOW THEY COUNT PEOPLE ADMITTED FOR COVID-19 --Hospitals across the state have a new way of keeping track of the progress in managing COVID-19.  A new mandate from Gov. Kathy Hochul was issued Monday that says hospitals need to record how many people are hospitalized because of COVID-19 and how many are admitted for other reasons and test positive for the virus while there.Gov. Hochul says she wants to get a clear picture of how many severe COVID-19 cases there are in the state. Hochul says she is hearing from hospital officials that the number of people that could be hospitalized for reasons that have nothing to do with COVID-19 and happen to test positive while in the hospital....MORE AT https://westchester.news12.com/alert-center-hospitals-to-change-how-they-count-people-admitted-for-covid-19

EVERYTHING CROTON'S ALL THINGS COOKERY, KITCHEN & TABLE #42: SOME HOSTESS LESSONS LEARNED IN THE 2021 HOLIDAY SEASON

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

And now ALL THINGS COOKERY, KITCHEN & TABLE...our continuing series here at the blog for all you cooking enthusiasts out there---recipes, tips, local shopping, interesting links....we'll keep it light and joyful...when possible....click on the photos and links. AND NOW....

Because so many of us celebrated with friends and family------EVERYTHING CROTON'S ALL THINGS COOKERY, KITCHEN & TABLE #42: HOSTESS LESSONS LEARNED IN THE 2021 HOLIDAY SEASON!

Some of these may seem terribly obvious, but in the hustle and bustle of playing hostess--or host---these often simple things can be forgotten---then joyfully re-discovered!

For example:

---NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF CHIPS AND DIPS!  And in particular, that classic LIPTON ONION SOUP DIP! (Get that recipe here.)  Your editor and the elves also  relied on many of the dip recipes found here at holiday get-togethers.

---YES IT IS POSSIBLE TO DO A SMASHING CHARCUTERIE BOARD EVEN ON A BUDGET.

You start by being willing to make thoughtful and well-researched (by those you've learned to trust!) substitutions.  (And sad to say with supply chain issues the norm in 2021, we all had to become adept at this sooner or later!)

Your editor and the elves relied on many of the tips and links found here and here with great success.  And all our charcuterie boards were lauded far and wide, lol!

---MAKE SURE TO SHARE WHEN YOU FIND GOOD PRODUCTS AND WHERE!

In no particular order: here's some of our favorites we re-discovered this holiday season:

1) THE KITCHEN SHOP AT CROTON SHOPRITE--more than once, this aisle pulled us out of a tight spot!

2) GOYA OLIVES WITH PIMENTOS; so good and so reasonably priced; available just about everywhere.

3) HORMELL PRE-SLICED PEPPERONI; yes this seems like sacrilege but if you can't get your favorite brand, imported or domestic--for whatever reason---this is a surprisingly tasty and economical alternative.  A time-saver too.

4) BUBBIE'S KOSHER DILL PICKLES AT SUPER FOODTOWN! SOOOOO GOOOOD AND SO BRONX, LOWER EAST SIDE AUTHEHTIC; MORE HERE

5) PAPERBIRD COCKTAIL NAPKINS; this is an in-house Shoprite---"economical"---brand and to be honest, was not our first choice.  But our regular brand was nowhere to be found and we took the chance.  So glad we did.  Quite high quality and no one noticed the difference.

And finally, we re-iterated our commitment to shop locally whenever possible, to live fearlessly despite the frightened folks often around us, and to enjoy those special moments with friends and family.

Looking forward to more adventures in the 2022 season of EVERYTHING CROTON'S ALL THINGS COOKERY, KITCHEN & TABLE.

ANOTHER FILM FOR THE BUCKET LIST: NEW FROM EFSP: IL GATTOPARDO/THE LEOPARD 1963

New from our freinds at European Film Star Postcards:

Last Sunday, Luchino Visconti's Il Gattopardo/The Leopard (1963) was broadcast on the Italian network La7 and attracted almost one million (973,000) viewers. A decidedly good result and above the network's average when it programs films in prime time and also above the average for a couple of well-known Italian talk shows. New generations are discovering Visconti's masterpiece! An excellent reason to repeat our post on Il Gattopardo.

Il Gattopardo/The Leopard (1963) is based on Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's 1958 bestseller 'Il Gattopardo' about an aristocratic Sicilian family's adjustment to a changing way of life during the Risorgimento. After the premiere, the long epic received mixed reviews but it is now seen as one of the greatest classics of Italian cinema. STARRING BURT LANCASTER, ALAIN DELON, CLAUDIA CARDINALE; Read and see much more here.

And remember: As is the case with most Visconti films, the viewer is required to pay attention; the little details truly add up.....

Read and see more about Cardinale HERE.  Read and see more about Delon HERE.  Read more about American film legend Burt Lancaster HERE.

A reader noted that a link to a 2018 article on the Cuomo Buffalo Billions scandal here at the blog was no longer active; we tried it---it's still there:

Cuomo’s Buffalo Billion was beyond corrupt 7/3/18-- The usual suspects had predictable reactions this week after a federal trial jury convicted three upstate real-estate developers and the State University’s onetime nanotech czar, Alain Kaloyeros, on charges of bid-rigging tied to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s upstate economic-development projects. Cuomo’s harshest critics jumped on the verdict in the Buffalo Billion case as further evidence that, in the gleefully overwrought phrase of a state GOP release, he is “the most crooked, corrupt governor New Yorkers have seen in more than a century.” The governor portrayed the trial’s outcome as a run-of-the-mill criminal matter. “The jury has spoken and justice has been done,” he said. Nonpartisan good-government advocates saw the case as further proof of the need for laws to ensure more transparency and accountability in government, as well as campaign-finance reform. https://nypost.com/2018/07/13/cuomos-buffalo-billion-was-beyond-corrupt/

A 1915 ARTICLE: MARGARET MAYO'S "MOVIE PARTY", SOME NOTABLE ATTENDEES

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton-on-Hudson: our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

ONE OF CROTON'SMOST NOTABLE RESIDENTS---PLAYWRIGHT MARGARET MAYO (Read more about her here)

AND NOW A 1915 ARTICLE:  THE ARGUS---AUGUST 8, 1915---MARGARET MAYO'S "MOVIE" PARTY.  Click on the images and links.  Some notable attendees at the MOVIE PARTY and their bios:

-----AVERY HOPWOOD:  Hopwood started out as a journalist for a Cleveland newspaper as its New York correspondent, but within a year had a play, Clothes (1906), produced on Broadway. He became known as "The Playboy Playwright"[ and specialized in comedies and farces, some of them with material considered risqué at the time. One play, The Demi-Virgin in 1921, prompted a court case because of its suggestive subject matter, including a risque game of cards, "Stripping Cupid", where a bevy of showgirls teased the audience in their lingerie. The case was dismissed.

....Hopwood's plays were very successful commercially, but they did not have the lasting literary significance he hoped to achieve. there is however, the Hopwood Award.

READ MORE ABOUT HOPWOOD HERE.

-----IRWIN S. COBB: Irvin Shrewsbury Cobb was an American author, humorist, editor and columnist from Paducah, Kentucky, who relocated to New York in 1904, living there for the remainder of his life.

He wrote for the New York World, Joseph Pulitzer's newspaper, as the highest paid staff reporter in the United States.

Cobb also wrote more than 60 books and 300 short stories. Some of his works were adapted for silent movies.

Several of his Judge Priest short stories were adapted in the 1930s for two feature films directed by John Ford.

....The World War II Liberty Ship SS Irvin S. Cobb was named in his honor...Following the Second World War, the Illinois Central Railroad named a passenger train operating between Louisville and Memphis, via Cobb's hometown, Paducah, the Irvin S. Cobb.

READ MORE ABOUT COBB HERE.

----HOLBROOK BLINN, also in attendance.  Of Blinn Road fame, and a noted actor in his day..

Some of his finest silent screen accomplishments are in McTeague (1916), The Bad Man (1923), Rosita (1923), Yolanda (1924), and Janice Meredith (1924), the latter two films both starring Marion Davies.

In 1928, Blinn was unanimously elected president of the Actors' Fidelity League

Here he is in THE BAD MAN; read more ABOUT BLINN HERE.

IMPORTANT NEWS, NEW YORK LAWMAKERS AREN'T VOTING TO DETAIN THE UNVACCINATED

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton-on-Hudson: our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

AS THIS HAS BEEN A HOT TOPIC LOCALLY, AN UPDATE:

Social media has it wrong. NY lawmakers aren't voting to detain the unvaccinated, AP says--Sarah Taddeo and Angelo Fichera
USA Today Network New York, The Associated Press

A claim that New York lawmakers are poised to vote on a bill to detain the unvaccinated in medical facilities is false, according to state Assembly leaders.

The claim, which is making the rounds on social media, stems from a bill first introduced in the New York state Legislature in 2015, that would allow for the temporary detention of individuals infected, or suspected of being infected, with a contagious disease during a public health emergency.

The state Assembly’s health committee has no plans to take action on the bill, and its sponsor, Assembly member N. Nick Perry, D-Brooklyn, now says he will withdraw it, according to The Associated Press.....MORE AT https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2021/12/29/new-york-lawmakers-voting-bill-detain-covid-unvaccinated-false-claim/9034694002/

OPINION PIECE, NY POST, PUBLIC HEALTH AUTHORITIES, COVID LIES, MASKS, BLACK LIVES MATTER & MORE

Excerpted.  Red the entire article at the link below

-------The “public health” response to COVID has been awful. Ever since cases first appeared in Wuhan, the reaction has been marked by mistakes, reversals, outright lying and even political manipulation. We need a thorough accounting.

Mistakes are forgivable........

Likewise, reversals aren’t necessarily bad......

But lies and political manipulation are different. Those are a betrayal of trust, and they’re especially serious because trust is the public health community’s greatest asset. The record here has been terrible, and we need investigation and accountability.

Early on, public health officials minimized COVID’s dangers, with Anthony Fauci telling people that it was safe to go on cruises. Maybe that was just a mistake. But then Fauci told people not to wear masks because they didn’t help, changing his position within a couple of weeks to become stringently pro-mask. The earlier statement, it turned out, wasn’t based on his scientific opinion but on a desire to reserve masks for health-care workers — a worthy goal, but that doesn’t justify the lying.

Public health officials then pushed lockdowns to the max, telling everyone to stay in their homes and not to gather in even small groups, but after George Floyd’s death they suddenly announced an exception: It was fine to gather in huge groups if you were protesting on behalf of Black Lives Matter. READ IT ALL AT https://nypost.com/2021/12/30/we-must-make-public-health-authorities-accountable-for-covid-lies/
