CROTON NOTABLES: RICHARD MERKIN, GLORIA SWANSON AND WILLIAM GADDIS,
FIRST UP, CROTON'S RICHARD MERKIN (Richard Marshall Merkin (1938 – September 5, 2009)--an American painter, illustrator and arts educator. Merkin's fascination with the 1920s and 1930s defined his art and shaped his identity as a professional dandy. He died at his home in Croton after a long illness. One of the elves stumbled upon this fab post on MERKIN entitled RICHARD MERKIN: THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER by Alan Flusser; you can read it at https://alanflusser.com/musings-from-alans-desk/richard-merkin
YOU CAN SEE SOME EXAMPLES OF MERKIN'S WORK HERE.
NEXT---As many of you know, Gloria Swanson one of Croton's most notable residents. You can read more about her Croton connection here.
Click on the image to see an amazing trading card featuring Swanson from Lloyd's Cigarettes.
For those who don't know: Cigarette, cigar and chocolate companies often produced trading cards with their products. These card sets document popular culture from the turn of the century, often depicting the period's actresses, costumes, and sports, as well as offering insights into mainstream humour and cultural norms.
This image comes to you courtesy of FLICKR'S "CIGCARDPIX"; you can see another great shot of Swanson from his stream by clicking here AND HERE.
AND ANOTHER NOTE, YOU CAN SEE THE CROTON DAM ON A WILLS CIGARETTE CARD HERE.

I like Gaddis but like Hesse, he can be a bit difficult to read. You have to go in with a very determined view that you won't give up because the ride is worth it.
