HEN HUD SCHOOL DISTRICT, ENTERGY REACH NEW PILOT AGREEMENT 8/28/2020

For those following this issue: CORTLANDT, NY — Hendrick Hudson district officials and Entergy agreed to a revised schedule for the corporation's payment in lieu of taxes for the Indian Point Energy Center that gives the schools about $2 million more than expected over the next two years.

Indian Point will permanently shut down by April 30.

The agreement, covering the 2020-21 and 2021-22 fiscal years, replaces a 10-year agreement between the two that had been approved in 2015.

Entergy will make payments of $22,279,822 to the school district for the current fiscal year and $16,232,442 for the 2021-22 fiscal year. This represents an increase of $636,566 for 2020-21, and an increase of $1,947,891 for the 2021-22 school year, district officials said. READ MORE AT

On September 2, 1945 onboard the USS Missouri, the formal surrender of Japanese forces marked the end of World War II. During that war, more than 12 million Americans fought around the world and 407,316 made the ultimate sacrifice. As we mark the 75th anniversary, let us remember all of those who defeated the forces of fascism and preserved the freedom which we have today.

PANDEMIC SHOULD NOT BE AN EXCUSE FOR EXACERBATING INEQUALITY, A LETTER FROM THIS WEEK'S GAZETTE--MORE FROM THE GOOD ENOUGH FOR THEE BUT NOT FOR ME VIRUS CHRONICLES

To the editor:

At the start of the Covid pandemic, we were stuck indoors watching Hollywood celebrities sing “Imagine no possessions” and lecture us about how we are all in this together. This Sunday we will see once again the hypocrisy of Hollywood, and the willingness of Andrew Cuomo to use his extraordinary emergency power to favor the wealthy and powerful here in New York State.

Regular people arriving in New York are met at the airport and forced to quarantine under threat of 15 days in jail and a $10,000 fine. If you refuse to give your cell phone number and consent to “daily monitoring messages” then the NYS Contact Tracing Program will come knocking on your door, as they have done with more than 2,000 recent arrivals. But if you are a celebrity? Fly your Gulfstream into Teterboro and roam about at will.

Most people reading this paper are not Hollywood celebrities. We cannot even do a Lady Gaga karaoke. But if you are Lady Gaga herself: you can fly in to NY, not be bothered with quarantine, and sing live on national television as part of a splashy award show production.

Look, I get it. Lady Gaga and her fellow performers such as Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande are suffering. Music is their job. They can’t do touring and so they are having trouble paying for those mansions and fleets of private jets.

I feel less heartbroken for Hollywood celebrities than for the guy in Queens or Westchester who owns a karaoke bar and is facing bankruptcy. And make no mistake: the amount of small business bankruptcies is going to be a financial and personal disaster for many New York families. But regardless of whether your sympathies lie with the glitzy A-listers or the small business owners, the pandemic should not be an excuse to further exacerbate inequality.

Just because wealthy people like Gaga (net worth $320 million), Cyrus (net worth $200 million) and Grande (pauper of the group with a mere $150 million) need to work does not mean that they should be exempt from the rules the rest of us have to follow. We all need to work, since most of us don’t have hundreds of millions of dollars socked away.

The science is what it is. It should not be a tool for rewarding friends and punishing the working people.

If it is too dangerous to have karaoke in a bar, then it is too dangerous to have hundreds of performers and stagehands gathering to sing live. If it is a scientific necessity for people to quarantine for 14 days when arriving on that fresh hell known as Delta Airlines, then it is a scientific necessity for people to quarantine for 14 days when arriving on a $40M private jet.

Even if you don’t care about the MTV Video Music Awards, you should care about what this year’s telecast represents: we are not all in this together. Sunday night will be the latest proof of that sad fact.

Blonde, slim Vera-Ellen (1921-1981) was one of the most vivacious and vibrant musical film talents to glide through Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s.

Whether performing solo or dueting with the best male partners of her generation, including Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor, Vera-Ellen gave life to some of the most extraordinary dance routines ever caught on film. She was a dance sensation in a string of light-hearted but successful films. Vera-Ellen retired from acting in the late 1950s.

We're always on the look-out for wonderful old architecture; the fire station to the right comes from the land down under and depicts Sydney in 1890 (no copyright restrictions); we love everything about the shape of this building but especially the tower with its elaborate round windows.  It's followed by a wonderful circa 1950's log cabin tin for Towles syrup courtesy of a friend. We just love the graphics.  And finally an oldie but goodie--an outstanding collection of relatively new small house tins courtesy of Howard Lamey--proof positive that cool vintage-inspired graphics can still be found today if you make the time to look.

ALBANY — Despite a statewide hiring freeze and massive budget deficit thanks to COVID-19, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office has been adding high-profile and expensive new employees to the payroll, according to a new report.

State budget director Robert Mujica wrote to all state agencies and public authorities on April 28 directing them to “cease all hiring” except jobs deemed essential to protecting public health and safety. He also said special waivers would have to be granted for hirings during this time.  However, Cuomo’s office has made several new key hires and OK’d promotions since April, the Albany Times Union reported Friday.

Stephen Silverman, a former advisor to ex-New York City mayor and failed presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg as well as a consultant for the Clinton Foundation whose primary job was to boost the former president’s profile, was hired in August as a senior communications advisor for speechwriting and strategic messaging.  Cuomo also scooped up Laura Montross as his new deputy communications director of policy and issue advocacy. TEACHERS UNION DEMANDS MASKS AT ALL TIMES EVEN WHEN SOCIAL DISTANCING

NYSUT: State must require masks in schools, even when social distancing

Rockland/Westchester Journal News

NYSUT, the statewide teachers union, is calling on the state to require the wearing of masks inside schools to help prevent spread of the coronavirus.

Right now, the state Health Department says that masks are "strongly recommended" but requires the wearing of masks only when six-foot social distancing cannot be maintained, like when students and staff are entering and leaving school.

NYSUT President Andy Pallotta said that it appears, based on hundreds of school districts' reopening plans, that many people will "walk into their classrooms and take their masks off" when schools reopen next month.

It was a banner Sunday at a local tag sale a few weeks back----and it was so good to see so many people out and about. We found scads of old photos and cabinet cards and have posted two here with more to come in the weeks ahead. Unknown beauties...perhaps actresses....most likely from around World War One.

They're followed by an unusual 1950's toy, the Para-Jet, featured in a long ago auction at SeriousToyz----ade by Admiral Toys, 9", hard plastic jet gun w/ silk parachute; ejects pilot just like a real jet plane...pull trigger, canopy opens & pilot shoots up and parachutes gracefully down.

Worth looking at again: Marx Ranch house--from Toys & Stuff: Back on Mar 3, 2011 Toys & Stuff featured scans of this modern Ranch House (Ranch House scans) and today we're FINALLY featuring photos of the built-up house. The house measures 7 5/8" (19.4cm) L x 3 1/8" (7.9cm)n D x 2 1/2" (6.4cm) H. This whole debacle has taught me a lesson (I hope). SEATTLE COUNCIL SUBMITS BILL TO ABOLISH THE POLICE

Seattle lawmakers want to abolish the city’s police force and replace it with a “community-led” safety prevention program, according to proposed legislation released Friday. Arguing that the Seattle Police Department “perpetuates racism and violence” and upholds “white supremacy culture,” the Seattle City Council moved to redirect cash to a non-profit, civilian-led “Department of Community Safety & Violence Prevention” — and offered a “blueprint” on how to defund the police, according to the resolution.  Under the bill, cops would be replaced by “community-led activities” and organizations focused on “housing, food security, and other basic needs” along with “culturally-relevant expertise rooted in community connections,” according to documents posted by Christopher Rufo, Director of Discovery Institute’s Center on Wealth & Poverty. Anti-cop demonstrators wreaked havoc in Lower Manhattan on Saturday night, setting fires and vandalizing several NYPD vehicles.

The chaos and destruction can be seen on video and was meant as a show of solidarity with protesters in Portland and Seattle, according to officials and police sources.

Video of the night’s unrest shows vandals defacing a trio of marked NYPD vans, tagging them with graffiti, slashing their tires and attempting to smash in their windows with a signpost and the wheel of a bicycle.............The unrest was billed as a show of solidarity with Portland, Ore., a city increasingly marked by violent clashes between demonstrators and authorities — including federal agents deployed by the Trump administration. Similar chaos on Saturday gripped Atlanta, Seattle and Baltimore.

Police arrested two Bronx men in connection with the caught-on-camera Brooklyn Bridge attack on cops, including NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan, who on Thursday described the alleged assailants as “anarchists.” Quran Campbell, 25, of the Bronx, was charged with attacking three separate officers, police said. Shayborn Banks, also 25 and from the Bronx, was busted for allegedly assaulting a lieutenant and criminal possession of a weapon. “They are part of this anarchist group that has been infiltrating this Black Lives movement since the beginning,” Monahan said on “Good Day New York.“ MORE HERE
