ALLAN AUNAPU, FIRST CAPTAIN OF THE HUDSON RIVER SLOOP CLEARWATER, HAS DIED

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship----in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Allan Aunapu--The Hudson River sloop Clearwater’s first captain, Allan J. Aunapu, died in an accident last Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at age 79, according to a news release from the Clearwater nonprofit organization.

An accomplished musician in addition to being an expert sailor, Aunapu skippered the Clearwater on its maiden voyage in 1969.

The first crew was made up largely of musicians, including Pete Seeger, Don McLean and first mate Gordon Bok. They sailed from Maine down the coast to New York Harbor stopping along the way to give fundraising concerts.

  1. Thank you so much for spreading this news. Allan was committed to Clearwater and to Croton until the end. He was prepared to drive to Croton for the 2019 Great Hudson River Revival (Clearwater Festival), but arrived by airline when we bought him a ticket.

As someone who grew up in Croton and remembers Clearwater Festival fondly, I'm grateful for your marking of his passage.
