ANOTHER BANNER AUGUST SATURDAY IN THE HUDSON VALLEY: HARMON DELI, JUST ADD WATER ORCHIDS AT SHOPRITE, CORTLANDT VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK, THE VERPLANCK NATURE PRESERVE, THE RESERVOIR & TURCO's

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

ANOTHER BANNER AUGUST SATURDAY IN THE HUDSON VALLEY:  HARMON DELI, JUST ADD WATER ORCHIDS AT SHOPRITE, CORTLANDT VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK, THE VERPLANCK NATURE PRESERVE, THE RESERVOIR & TURCO's.

Click on the photos and links.

FIRST UP, AN "EARLY BIRD WRAP" FROM THE HARMON DELI (egg whites, broccoli rabe, and avacado on a multi-grain roll)....Formerly LaMonica's, the "Harmon Deli" was extensively re-modeled and re-opened in 2017.

See their breakfast menu--and much more, by way of Croton Suburban Guides here. (PS: We love their home-made mozzarella.)

NEXT, a birthday gift for the gardening friend who can't get enough---THE JUST ADD ICE line of orchids at Croton's Shoprite.  Extensively renovated and completed in 2017,  Shoprite now boasts a beautiful new plant, floral and gift shop.....filled with sustainably grown items, often beautifully packaged, and more. (FYI--a very large section of front wall near the registers has been reserved for the sale of reusable bags.)

Shoprite is also currently home to some of the most beautiful orchids in every price point.  THE JUST ADD ICE LINE is the easy way to keep an orchid in tip-top shape and a perfect gift.

That done, we headed to the Verplanck waterfront and an easy walk through the Town of Cortlandt Veterans Memorial Park where we spotted this beautiful heron near the dock.

Then a quick amble up the road to the Verplanck Preserve and Nature Trail (read and see more about this great spot here).  A Heads-Up: Don't wander off the trails/paths. This is truly a wild, beautiful  place and you'll avoid the ticks, poison ivy, etc.

While your editor is happy to report that beautiful new wrought iron benches have been strategically placed at the Preserve, there's also some sad news....

Because it appears that an old hot water heater tank has been dumped into the small lake.

The Town has been emailed...

And then for a beautiful drive---we headed past the Croton Reservoir---always an impressive sight in any season--to stop at Turco's in Yorktown for two of their specialty items:  stuffed portabella mushrooms and their house-made mango salsa. Always call in advance to make sure they have them available.

On the way back to Croton, we spotted two immature eagles engaged in a spat over a fish near the Croton Dam!  It's nice to know that some eagles appear to have made the Hudson Valley their permanent home.
