A VISIT TO THE VERPLANCK PRESERVE AND NATURE TRAILS

Another beautiful morning in the Hudson Valley.....today a visit to the recently completed Verplanck Preserve and Nature Trails---a hop, skip and a jump from the Town of Cortlandt's Veterans Memorial Park.

First up, a stop at the Croton Dunkin Donuts for their latest offering: BROWN SUGAR COLD BREW.  Outstanding! No artificial flavors, naturally flavored brown sugar syrup added to the brand’s popular Cold Brew coffee.  Now it's sweet--be prepared--but the taste of the coffee itself is enhanced--in your editor's humble opinion.  It will only be around for the summer.

Ten minutes later by car, we were in the Verplanck Nature Preserve; it's a small preserve, but serene. There's a gravel and dirt parking area, a quiet lake--and a very wild pond that changes size with the seasons.  There's a small deck for observing fish, bullfrogs, morning reflections, the occasional heron and water snake.   In fact, the entire preserve is very wild, but flat, easy to walk, quiet, and a step back in time.

Follow the rules to keep it that way--and stick to the well-defined  trails--that includes your four-legged family members.

You'll be rewarded with wild flowers and seldom seen birds and butterflies...and you'll avoid the poison ivy and other less friendly critters who also call this place home.  Click on the photos.

  1. I love their coffee, no politics, free wifi, super hours.

  2. A really serene spot and small dog walkers should be aware the area is frequented by hawks.
