LAWN SIGNS AND FLYERS, WHAT ARE THE RULES?

A number of residents (including real estate agents) have written to comment or ask about the rules pertaining to lawn signs, both on private property and village rights of way, as well as the posting of assorted "flyers on poles".

In recent weeks, the village has cited various reasons why whatever statutes/laws that do exist are not enforced.  Questions have also arisen as to how long lawn signs and flyers, irrespective of content, can remain "up".

Your editor suggests that you instead consult the village code at crotononhudson-ny.gov and/or that you direct your questions to village staff and/or the board either in writing or at meetings.  Please note however, that the village board has a new policy in place with respect to answering questions/being addressed directly.  You can read Rick Turner's letter here and Paul Steinberg's letter here.

  1. This is not that complicated, but the basic principle is not understood here in Croton (including by our Police Chief and School Superintendant):

YOU CAN NOT DISCRIMINATE ON THE BASIS OF VIEWPOINT.

Croton can indeed impose certain restrictions, so long as those restrictions are facially viewpoint-neutral and applied in a viewpoint-neutral manner.

The problem here in Croton is that we don't want to impose lawful restrictions. The reason that NYC can tear down flyers from poles is that they do it for EVERYBODY including powerful political candidates.

  2. The in-laws from Rhode Island are visiting. What's with all the lawn signs they asked? Kinda looks "slobbish". Like I need to hear this but you know what, it does. There are six houses on my block, five have signs, slow down, no hate, love, love, and one has FOUR. Crazy.
