We love finding vintage ads and it's even better when they have a Croton connection. Here one from Theatre Arts--May 1958--and Croton's Verne House, apparently known for many years for fine antiques--that ticks off some interesting boxes---"Czar Nicholas I" in particular, and Madame Rachel for another. CLICK ON THE IMAGE BELOW.
Madame Rachel was almost certainly Mademoiselle Rachel (Rachel FĂ©lix), the most celebrated French tragedienne of the mid‑19th century, and she did indeed undertake a major triumphal tour across Europe—including Russia—in 1854. (Not to be confused with the Victorian fraudster, Sarah Rachel Russell, a London con artist active in the 1850s–1870s—also known as Madame Rachele---but her 1854 notoriety came from a perjury case, not a theatrical triumph.)
Rachel’s fame extended far beyond France, and in 1854 she embarked on a widely publicized--and documented--international tour, performing in major European capitals. The tour is considered one of the great European artistic tours of the era. Wonder what Verne House sold this item for!
As for Czar Nicholas I, there's much to unpack with him....and lots available on the internet.
