WE CANNOT DISOBEY FEDERAL LAW JUST BECAUSE WE DON'T LIKE WHO IS PRESIDENT

We Cannot Disobey Federal Law Just Because We Don’t Like Who Is President

June 07, 2018

The following letter was published in this week’s issue of the Gazette.

To the editor: In the May 24/30 issue of the Gazette, I wrote a letter outlining why the Croton proposed Local Law 5 and proposed Resolution were illegal. None of the Board chose to respond directly, but rather once again Mr. Masur in his capacity as Chairman of the Croton Democratic Village Committee was the one to defend the actions taken by the Croton Board of Trustees (The Gazette, week of May 31/June 6).

Mr. Masur quotes me as saying that the trustees were “pitching a tax avoidance scheme which is both illegal and creates liability for residents and the municipality itself.” Mr. Masur then goes on to object on the basis that “This was the foundational premise of Mr. Steinberg’s lengthy letter to the editor, despite the fact that, as he well knows, no such proposal was ever voted on by the trustees.”

Mr. Masur is blatantly misleading in quoting me because he omits the word preceding the sentence fragment. My actual full quote can be found at paragraph 4 of my letter: “Along with other municipalities in New York, New Jersey, and California, the Village of Croton-on-Hudson is considering pitching a tax avoidance scheme….”

By omitting the first clause of the sentence, and in particular the “considering” language, Mr. Masur alters my statement and then criticizes me for a position which I did not express. I made it clear that there were proposed schemes in 3 states as well as in Croton. My objection is to the underlying scheme, and that applies wherever it is proposed.

The Village of Croton Board of Trustees has now had 3 meetings on this proposed Local Law, and according to statements made by the Village Attorney will be spending more taxpayer time attending a meeting in White Plains on June 8. 1962 CROTON SPORTS-A-RAMA

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EverythingCroton.

Back in late 2014, we had a request for anything related to a 1960's Croton event to raise funds for the Louis Drinkwine Scholarship Fund called SPORTS-A-RAMA. And we just had another request for the same thing.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MARC CHESHIRE, APPOINTED CROTON VILLAGE HISTORIAN

Congratulations to Marc Cheshire, who was appointed Village Historian at last night's village board meeting.

Mr. Cheshire stated that it was a great honor to be the tenth person to serve as Village Historian. Cheshire, a 24-year Croton resident, said that his interest in local history began when he met his next door neighbor, Joyce Finnerty, who was at that time the Village Historian.  When she told him that the foundation of his house was made of stone left over from the construction of the New Croton Dam and that a Native American skeleton had once been discovered at the end of his driveway, he became fascinated by the rich history of the Croton area.

Mr. Cheshire has been on the board of Croton Friends of History since 2009 and was appointed to the newly-formed Town of Cortlandt Historic Resources Advisory Council.

In 2012 he registered the domain name crotonhistory.org and began a blog, Croton: History and Mysteries, to share his research with the community. The blog has had more than 174,000 page views.

Mr. Cheshire added that he will continue to research and write about the history of Croton and will work closely with the dedicated volunteers of the Croton Historical Society. One of our first projects will be to create a website for the historical society, as well as a Facebook page and other social media accounts.

He urged everyone who is interested in preserving and promoting our history to become a member of the Croton Historical Society.  Further details will be posted soon at crotonhistoricalsociety.org

ANOTHER GREAT SUMMERFEST--With weather that started off cool and cloudy and ended up with bright sunshine, Croton’s annual Summerfest was another great event for residents, visitors, local businesses, and organizations. It was a little bittersweet because former Mayor Greg Schmidt (a.k.a. Mr. Summerfest) announced that after 32 years of organizing the event, this one would be his last. (CLICK ON THE PHOTO.) Thank you, Greg, for your many years of service to our beloved village—and thanks to everyone who participated. SEE THE PHOTO ALBUM HERE

PHOTO ALBUM COURTESY OF CROTON UNITED: DANISH HOME COMMEMORATES 1943 RESCUE OF DANISH JEWS

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Courtesy of Croton United - photo album from the Danish Home--DANISH HOME COMMEMORATES 1943 RESCUE OF DANISH JEWS--Grundlovsdag 2018 was a special celebration this year, marking the 75th Anniversary of the successful evacuation of 7000 Danish Jews to safety in Sweden.

Ambassador Riggelsen of Denmark, together with Ambassador Pagrotsky of Sweden were on hand to participate in the festivities at the Danish Home on Quaker Bridge Road.

Professor Leo Goldberger was 13 years old in 1943, and his talk about living in occupied Denmark and how his Danish neighbors risked their lives to save the Jewish population. In the middle of the night, the Nazis banged on the locked entrance to his apartment building, looking for Rabbi Goldberger. A quick-thinking upstairs neighbor leaned out the window and yelled at the Nazis that the Goldbergers had gone to their country house and if the Nazis didn’t stop banging on the door and go away, he would call the police.

A MESSAGE FROM BOB ANDERSON

Dear Friends: In recent months, some of you have asked me why Croton United is not running candidates this year. There are several reasons. Croton United has always focused on local issues, not national ones. In our current national and local political climate, such a local focus is a disadvantage when running a campaign. Diversity of viewpoints is vital to our democracy, and I believe that Village matters are best resolved when there is robust input. The current trend in our nation to divide into two separate groups is not good for our democracy.

Having run for office, I know that it is a team effort. A campaign involves a large number of volunteers, especially in the case of a non-partisan campaign. Croton United is not affiliated with any state or national party, and so we are entirely dependent on local residents to do all the work involved in running a contested election campaign, as well as securing funding through donations. Croton United has continued to act as a non-partisan coalition of neighbors, and I continue to appreciate all of you working together in this effort. Speaking out in online forums, writing Gazette letters, serving on village committees, and contacting our elected officials in Albany and Washington is important for the health of our democracy.

Civic involvement is more than politics. It is an ongoing process that needs support from all of us. Many of our local community organizations suffer from lack of volunteers. READ MORE AT https://bit.ly/2LWnyTG
