HOME COMMEMORATES 1943 RESCUE OF DANISH JEWS--Grundlovsdag 2018 was a
special celebration this year, marking the 75th Anniversary of the
successful evacuation of 7000 Danish Jews to safety in Sweden.
Ambassador Riggelsen of Denmark, together with Ambassador Pagrotsky
of Sweden were on hand to participate in the festivities at the Danish
Home on Quaker Bridge Road.
Professor Leo Goldberger was 13 years
old in 1943, and his talk about living in occupied Denmark and how his
Danish neighbors risked their lives to save the Jewish population. In
the middle of the night, the Nazis banged on the locked entrance to his
apartment building, looking for Rabbi Goldberger. A quick-thinking
upstairs neighbor leaned out the window and yelled at the Nazis that the
Goldbergers had gone to their country house and if the Nazis didn’t
stop banging on the door and go away, he would call the police.
