WEATHER-RELATED DECISIONS CONCERNING MASS ATTENDANCE--A MESSAGE FROM FATHER McSWEENEY, ST. AUGUSTINE CATHOLIC CHURCH

WEATHER-RELATED DECISIONS CONCERNING MASS ATTENDANCE--A MESSAGE FROM FATHER McSWEENEY, ST. AUGUSTINE
CATHOLIC CHURCH

St. Augustine Church - Ossining, New York

Regarding our weather projections for Sunday-
Masses at St. Augustine will occur regardless of weather, but given the forecast, we recommend that parishioners attend Saturday, January 24 evening 5:00 pm Mass.

Each winter, the possibility of severe weather raises many questions regarding the obligation to attend Mass on days of obligation. Canon law of the Catholic Church (1247) states that on Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass IF the fulfillment of the obligation is not overly burdensome or dangerous. There is no obligation to attend Mass if weather and/or road conditions are unsafe or make travel dangerous or difficult, or, if one is unable to get out of their driveway or parked space. If there is a snow emergency in place by the state or local authorities, traveling for Mass may be seen as illegal or imprudent, as it risks your life as well as the lives of others, and becomes a danger to those trying to clear the roadways for future safe travel; thus, the obligation to attend Mass would also not be in force. Those persons who are unable to attend Mass on those days may view the celebration of Mass on television, Youtube, etc. In any event, some time should be given to private or family prayer in order to sanctify the Lord's Day. Prayers should be offered for those affected by the storm. Again, St. Augustine Church will have its regularly-scheduled Masses for those who are able to walk to Mass or who find it not too difficult to attend. Please take care and be safe.
