  1. Re-zoning. Urban Renewal. The damage done to communities far and wide is legendary. Will definitely have to see this exhibit and the old haunts again.

  2. It's true. I remember reading in the news at the time that some Croton leaders were ecstatic about it. Rip it all down they said, we'll get a new business downtown. Urban renewal was the thing at the time. So many countless lives upended for a dream that never happened. Sorry to say, history repeats itself. Just look around at what planners did to Peekskill. So much interesting architecture lost to the wrecking ball.

    1. To be sure we lost some great history there. Yeah there were some buildings that just had to go but what you had was Croton's real downtown. We'llnever get what we lost back. A lot of short sighted people and people who thought you couldn't fight City Hall but some communities did and the highway was stopped for whatever reason.

    2. And replaced with a lot of high density housing.

  4. We use to have the Upper Village and the Lower Village and Harmon. I still miss the Lower Village. The Post Office was roomy and old fashioned, Gerstein's Hardware Store, Morton's Dry Cleaning, a jewelry shop I seem to recall and more. Now we have that ugly pedestrian overpass. Not a good trade.
