PHOTOS/NOTES FROM THE 2015 TOUGHMAN RACE

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

NOTES FROM THE 2015 TOUGHMAN; PLEASE NOTE ALL TIMES ARE APPROXIMATE AS REPORTED

--RACE STARTED TO WIND DOWN AROUND 2:30-2:45 PM

--ROUTE 129 RE-OPENED AT APPROXIMATELY 2:30-2:45 PM

--DETOURS THROUGH FURNACE DOCK ALLEGEDLY WOUND DOWN AROUND THE SAME TIME

--UNCONFIRMED: ROUTE 9 REPORTEDLY RE-OPENED IN PIECES, FULLY OPEN BY APPROXIMATELY 2:45

--CLICK ON THE PHOTOS BELOW, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED; those photos contributed by Dick Nagle are so marked; they are not in any particular order.

--Accident report, from Dick Nagle, former head of Croton Emergency Management Services: Mr. Nagle was out on Croton Point Avenue at 6:30 am. Later he went up to the Furnace Dock Rd. detour at Tenampa Restaurant. Early on, as the first bikes were returning to the transition area, one of the riders smashed into the back of County ESU truck that was, he had been told, parked off on the side of the road. The rider suffered a broken wrist as well as other minor injuries. He was taken by ambulance to the Medical Center. The ambulance was delayed for a short time on CPA waiting for a police escort. By the time Mr. Nagle left at about 1:00 PM, that was the only injury he was aware of.

--Please note there have been unconfirmed reports of two accidents; the one mentioned above is the only one known at the present time.

--The Gazette was there; it is unknown at the present time whether News 12 or the Journal was covering any portion of the race.

--Congestion ebbed and flowed but was particularly bad at approx. 11 to noon.

--Editor's Note: Of the 11 businesses spoken to, most in the upper village, all reported no increase in traffic or less traffic than usual. There were a number of outright local and area closures, late openings or early closings. Signage was reported to be clearer and more plentiful in Briarcliff. Traffic nightmares largely occurred this year in the Furnace Dock area. The B14 bus route was not allowed to take its normal route. Back-ups and confusion were reported at Annsville Circle and beyond from 11 to approximately noon. More info as--and IF--it becomes available.

  1. Just wondering whether the anti-Indian Point people have something to add regarding the traffic. And yes, I for one did not go to work, did not get paid and, to quote another local blog, my baby will not get shoes.

  2. Thank you to this blog, Mr. Nagle, and all the recent letter writers on this race. I found all of this helpful in getting around but not enough to make me less aggravated than usual. How one municipality like Croton and the powers that be can shut down their neighbors around for miles and miles is beyond me. The costs in time, gas, so much for being green, lost income and business is incalcuable. I'm just glad it's over. Now make this the last time please.

  3. While I admire the participants in the race, this is the wrong place for it. Getting around the area outside of Croton on both sides was ridiculous. It would be one thing if this was the first time the race was held and no one really understood what they could expect but it has been years of these problems. Now I hear that Croton is considering a five year contract. That's damn inconsiderate of everyone else and for what exactly. It's time to say no.

  4. Traffic was not detoured on 129 around bramble bush as in previous years. They should have kept that route. This year they detoured traffic over the bridge with no signs for a detour at the bridges crossing causing unfamiliar drivers much confusion. It took me about a 1/2 hour behind confused drivers, to get back to 9A in Ossining. Needless to say, I was late for my 9:45 Game in Mahopac, even after leaving myself extra time. They should go back to the Bramble Bush detour for next years race, as well as making them pay for the police and security. Jmi

    1. No this should be the last year for the race. I just spoke to two delis and asked how many Toughman customers. Theye BOTH laughed. It's time to just stop this race period in Croton.

  5. If Croton wants to embrace this thing, fine. Next year keep it out of Ossining's way and Montrose and Buchanan. You have no idea how many problems you made for people who get paid by the hour at Shoprite to get to work and whoever thought it was a bright idea to send commercial traffic vehicles up Furnance Dock Road with traffic coming from the other direction!

    Fed up in Montrose

  6. I would like to be happy about this race but enough is enough. I'm also sick of letters from people who say they live in Croton when they don't or from people who don't live in Croton telling the rest of us to just buck up. Please guys. Enough IS enough.

  7. I went out to take pictures around 1:30pm but the only traffic I found was on Croton Point Avenue as southbound cars backed up as far as Giovanni's. The backup was caused by cars coming from the northbound Route 9/9A exit and Riverside Ave (northbound and southbound). It looked like traffic was being handled by either the County or NYS, There were no backups on 9/9A at this time. Came back at 4:00pm and there were no backups anywhere. Went to get groceries at ShopRite and talked to staff in the deli. They said customers were steady all day. One employees from Buchanan said it took 45 minute to get to work in the morning due to the traffic backup. In the parking lot, I saw 3-5 cars with bikes attached to the rear. Not an impressive contribution to business. I also checked the sneaker store. They were open but there was only 1 car in their parking lot. No backup on Route 9/9A. Looks like I should have checked out the traffic in the early morning instead of the afternoon. I have a few pictures of the backup at 1:30pm and will send them later. If this event occurs next year, the time to take pictures is probably better in the early morning between 6:00am-8:00am.

  8. The worst backups were at Furnace Dock Road starting at about 8 and lasting steadilly for hours. I'm not a Croton resident but if you guys can do anything with your board to stop their complicity in this debacle it would be appreciated. Thank God there was no fire or anything. I almost got hit on a blind curve at Furnace Dock by a very confused person coming from the other direction. Thank God we both slammed the brakes in advance. She was in tears and said as she passed me, I'm going to lose my job. Time to stop this Croton.
