Kovacs's visually experimental and often spontaneous comedic style influenced numerous television comedy programs for years after his death. Kovacs has been credited as an influence by many individuals and shows, including Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, Saturday Night Live, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Jim Henson, and many others. Chevy Chase thanked Kovacs during his acceptance speech for his Emmy award for Saturday Night Live.

I remember a few of his routines myself, including one in which he played a working man trying to eat his lunch out of a lunch box, and everything kept sliding off the table - because the table and Ernie were sitting at an angle, but the camera was tilted so it looked like the table was level and gravity was being defied. Goofy stuff like that was his trademark.
