FAMILY GARDEN TRAINS - PREPARING FOR THE 14TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS-THEMED OPEN RAILROAD A.K.A. "CHRISTMAS TRAIN DAY"

WRITTEN BY PAUL RACE

How we prepared our railroad for our fourteenth annual Christmas-themed open railroad.

Why do trains and Christmas go together? Because the combined experiences of traveling by train on the holidays and running a toy train around the Christmas tree are embedded in our cultural memory.

Our railroad is outside, which can make running trains during the holidays "interesting." (Last year, we had four measurable snows in November.)

But we still like decorating our garden railroad for Christmas and having at least one Christmas-themed open railroad. In fact, we've been doing it since 2007, only missing in the year we moved.

What is "Christmas Train Day"? A few years back, I realized that when you invited people to a Christmas-themed open garden railroad, it took a lot of explaining. So I renamed the event "Christmas Train Day," which gets to the point much faster.
