And did you know that....

Basketball is one of the most popular team sports in the world and we celebrate it today, on the anniversary of the birth of James Naismith, its creator. Naismith was born in 1861 in Almonte, Ontario, Canada.

After leaving a position as the athletics director at McGill University in Montreal, Naismith came to the United States—a country where he would eventually gain citizenship—to the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, to teach physical education.

His superior asked him to come up with an indoor sport that could be played during winter, which would be fair and not too rough.

In December 1891, Naismith came up with "basket ball."
