Grant B. Smith, age 100, of Bethlehem, died Thursday, November 14, 2019. Grant was born in Peekskill, N.Y., the second oldest son to Grace and Joseph Smith. The family moved to Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. in 1929. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Eleanor (nee Masopust) and daughters: Lynne Jerrick and Bonnie Dunn, and brothers: Robert, William (Bill) and Winfred.
Grant attended Croton Harmon High School, playing varsity baseball and basketball, was president of the Varsity Club and Vice President of his Senior Class.
In Croton, he was an active volunteer fireman and received a N.Y. State Exempt Certificate for his many years of service. He was also a member of the American League. He held elected offices in both organizations.
Grant was a WWII Veteran serving with the 98th Infantry Division in Camp Breckinridge, KY. He was employed by National Distillers and Chemical Co for 34 years and retired in 1977. At National, he held various executive positions. In 1980, he moved to Cary, N.C. and shortly thereafter started working part time for Bitting Electric Co and enjoyed the relationship with friends and coworkers. He and his wife, Eleanor volunteered many years at the Cary Library and he worked along with her on many occasions.
In October 2016, he moved to Bethlehem.
A loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he is survived by five grandchildren: Michelle Dunn Wescott; Suzanne Dunn Hillenbrand; Nancy Dunn Domingo; Sheryl Jerrick Evans; and Glen Jerrick; nine great-grandchildren; and sister, Barbara Smith Brooks.
The grandchildren were understanding, helpful and always available, visiting Cary and Bethlehem many times.
Services will be private. Interment at St. Catharine's Cemetery, Sea Girt, N.J. joining Eleanor, Lynne and Bonnie in peace.
