WHITE PLAINS - Westchester County lawmakers defended a slew of planned raises for themselves, county department heads and other non-union staff that were first discussed publicly on Monday.
HIGHLIGHTS - Lawmakers are planning to boost their pay to $75,000 from $49,200 a year, a 52% increase, and they’re also expected to approve a slew of other raises that include 26% increases for many commissioners as part of the 2020 budget process....Commissioners would see their pay move to as much as $195,000 next year from today's rate of $155,000. And some positions in the medical arena would get hikes of $70,000 or more by 2020.The county Board of Legislators advanced the proposal at the meeting Monday by setting a public hearing for Dec. 3 on salary measures. Catherine Borgia, D-Ossining, chairwoman of the legislature’s Budget and Appropriations Committee, said the timing was right for raises after non-union management didn’t get increases since 2007 and lawmakers didn’t give themselves raises since 2005..."We know the work that we do is significant,” Borgia said. “We are very grateful to our staff, for the dedication that they show to serving the people of Westchester County and we believe this is a good use of county resources."
