FROM THE WISH WE HAD MORE ETHNIC FOOD HERE FOLKS

Your editor is often astonished at the number of "wish we had this" or "wish we had that" foodie comments that are out there.  The latest involves a desire for more ethnic food--including--surprise----things we ALREADY HAVE or more importantly, have ALREADY HAD in the not so distant past.

My favorite complaints involved a desire for a TAPAS restaurant, "a Ramen stand" and a "Caribbean place".  Where to begin.

Croton has had not one, BUT TWO, tapas restaurants.  The most recent failed about three years ago, despite being critically acclaimed.  That being said, new restaurant YUKA'S LATIN FUSION--CLICK ON THE PHOTO--offers classic and contemporary Latin fare--and has TAPAS MONDAYS. Yuka's has been featured on the Everything Croton MUST-TRY list from time to time, and has received excellent reviews. 

Then there were complaints that we could sure use a "Caribbean place".  Croton had a Caribbean place--it was called FLAVA--where EATALIA ON HUDSON is currently (note Eatalia closed 2022).  It closed approximately three or four years ago.  Excellent jerked chicken, excellent reviews.

And while Croton does not have the kind of population numbers (for which many are grateful) that could sustain a "stand" dedicated to "Ramen", you can still get EXCELLENT RAMEN at Asagao Japanese Cuisine (click on the photo).  Asagao too, has been featured many times on the E.C. Must-Try lists and has also received excellent reviews. Contemporary decor.

In short, residents who truly believe restaurants or "stands" dedicated to Tapas, Ramen, or Caribbean food will survive here, are certainly encouraged to pursue their dreams and invest their own cash.  Or in the alternative, to support what we have currently...

SUSTAINABLE WESTCHESTER, CCA, 2/17/18 & MORE

A reader recently asked: Who is the exec. director Sustainable Westchester? I can't find it on their website. I have heard that it's Bob Elliott. 

ANSWER: The following information is publicly available and was obtained from the links below. 

Sustainable Westchester calls itself a "consortium" of Westchester municipalities but in reality, it is a corporation that is not subject to FOIL, so it is not required to make disclosures about its leadership or its earnings based on requests from the public. According to GuideStar, a 501(c)(3) organization that collects and disseminates information about IRS registered nonprofit organizations, former Democratic Croton mayor Bob Elliott currently serves as Sustainable Westchester's "principal officer". He was introduced to attendees of a Zero Emissions Summit held in September 2017 as Sustainable Westchester's "Executive Director". Prior to Elliott's employment with SW, former Democratic Croton mayor Leo Wiegman served as SW's "Executive Director". 

Residents are reminded that the current all-Croton Democrat board of trustees will be voting on 2/20/18 (closed Monday for President's Day) to place the village into SW's Community Choice Aggregation program. Although at least two other competitors of Sustainable Westchester approached the village with a proposal to form a CCA program for the village (one of which promised the village that no taxpayer dollars would need to be spent to form it), it appears that neither other company's proposal has been considered by the current board, and that the village will be paying the costs of promoting and implementing SW's program. 

According to GuideStar, SW earned over $300,000 in 2016, and according to the agreement that the village will sign with SW, Sustainable Westchester will receive a payment for each kilowatt hour used by village electric consumers who remain in the program.

FROM THE EVERYTHING CROTON MAILBOX, 2 ISSUES: CCA AND TOWN ROADS

A READER ASKS: Since the all Democratic board of trustees will vote unanimously next TUESDAY night 2/20 to put all residents (not already in one) into a CCA program, is there a way I can “opt out” ahead of time before they implement the program (which is always mentioned but with no instructions attached as to how) and avoid the hassle. I have reservations and would like to see how it goes since there may be even better options to choose from. Is there someone I can talk to to get some help with this?

ANSWER: Yes. You can call Con Edison at 1-800-752-6633 and block your account. You may have to wait until you get a representative, depending on the time of day but be patient. You can always unblock your account in the future and it will be “YOUR CHOICE”. By the way, almost 25% of residents have made the choice to have their energy provided by another ESCO (Energy Service Company) on their own and are not affected by this current plan. If you have any additional questions, a number of residents are willing to assist by providing nonpartisan, unbiased information about the program, including former Deputy Mayor Bob Anderson. 2018 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS DONATION TO SEPTA: On Thursday February 8th, for the 2nd consecutive year, the Knights of Columbus #4730 of Holy Name of Mary Church, Croton-on-Hudson, donated $2000 to the Croton-Harmon Special Education PTA's (SEPTA) after-school program for elementary school students with special needs.The program enables students to develop important social and communication skills in a small supportive group setting. It has been a success and board members are considering the possibility of expanding the program in to the middle school.”

This year Henderick Hudson teams were victorious in both the boys and girls varsity games to take the 2018 Gazette Cup trophies.

It was Senior night. 

Croton Girls honored seniors Ryan Noel, Emily Squire and Emily Kehoe as well as Media Specialist, Megan Giordano and Statistician Ashley Rossini.
