best-known for his role as Ashley Wilkes in Gone with the Wind (1939).
Other popular films were The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934), The Petrified

During the Second World War he was active in anti-Nazi propaganda. In 1943 his
airliner was shot down, and this sparked modern conspiracy theories regarding
his death.
