Lillian Nordica and Her Weight-Loss Bath Powder
Two summers ago, I took an overnight trip to visit the Lillian Nordica Homestead Museum in Farmington, Maine. Nordica (1857-1914) was and remains interesting to me in part because shewas one of the earliest participants in a phenomenon that is now integral to our society: celebrity endorsement. Before movie stars and sports heroes attached their names to products such as sneakers, soft drinks, and soaps, opera stars were among the personalities most sought after by companies to shill for their wares.
