STATUS OF THE GOUVEIA "GIFT", THE OSSINING BANK BUILDING (FOR SAVINGS), STILL EMPTY 2019

For those who have asked, the Gouveia "gift" of the Ossining bank building, still remains empty. (Click on the photo).

In 2003
, John Gouveia donated 200 Main Street (a.k.a. the "bank for savings") to the Village of Ossining. Since that time, a number of proposals have made for the use of the "gift", all of which have not come to fruition.

The building needs extensive work and remains a drain on Ossining taxpayers. Proposals have included everything from affordable housing to artist lofts, a jazz club, a museum, an arts center and more. A previous estimate back in approximately 2014, indicated that the site would require $2.9 million to completely restore and bring up to code, handicapped regulations, etc. It is now February 2019 and that estimate is unlikely to have gone down. The Village of Ossining has repeatedly sought developers to no avail.  Will keep you posted.
