BEST VINTAGE SATURDAY FIND TO DATE: THE 1939 WORLD'S FAIR NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE SPECIAL SECTION

Sometimes the happiest finds are the ones you didn't know you had--like the box of 1930's china plates a friend fell in love with at a tag sale. Each pair of dinner plates, there were 20, were separated by layers of old newspaper--brittle and yellowed, a mere breath scattered bits in every direction. But...

Way down in the middle...protected from the elements, there was a surprise: The New York Herald Tribune 1939 World's Fair Section! The content is wonderful.

We've been ironing and taping pages as we go--and bringing you the scans when time permits. There's a page dedicated to what was playing on Broadway at the time: Raymond Massey as Abe Lincoln in Illinois. The Pulitzer prize-winning play would be be made into a film the following year with Massey reprising the lead. Tallulah Bankhead in The Little Foxes; Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story, and more. In addition, television broadcasting in the New York area was scheduled to begin on April 30th--and RCA Victor Television Receivers and the Empire State Building were ready.
