YONKERS ON ICE OR BABY, IT'S BEEN COLD OUT THERE...

Thank you Ed Riley for the opportunity to feature this marvelous photo from Michael Anderson, who grew up in Croton with Riley's sons. His father is Bob Anderson of Oak Place. Mike is one of the Captains of the Hudson River pilot boat "Trenton" home ported at the bottom of the Yonkers pier. Yonkers (photo) from one day last week. (Click on the image.)

"The pilot boat station is shut down so they are going down to Staten Island for the Pilot exchange (between the Hudson River Ship's Pilot and the New York Harbor Ship's Pilot)."

The second photo is of a ship that the Yonkers Pilot boat met up with.

There's also a video we will try to load--no guarantees. If it all works out, there will be a PART TWO.

  1. Ships from all over the world come up the Hudson-They require a local Pilot to take control of the ship while it navigates the channels that change over time with depths . The Pilot boat must pull along the side of the ship while both are still moving. The local pilot must step (jump) from the Pilot boat onto a rope ladder hanging from the ship and climb up to board the ship deck! No matter what the weather. All while both vessels are underway moving.

    1. Thank you Bob or the additional info. The video is intense to say the least. Fingers crossed I can get it online.
