CROTON'S CONNECTION TO ST. DISTAFF(!)...BY WAY OF THE NIDDY NODDY! Click on the photos and links.
Distaff Day--(thought not to be based on an actual saint by some) and also called Roc Day, is always held on January 7th, the day after the feast of the Epiphany.
Sometimes incorrectly spelled as ROCK DAY, it is one of the many unofficial holidays in Catholic nations per Wikipedia.
All this reminded us of an earlier post and article from January 1971...
"ROCK DAY" TRADITION OBSERVED AT THE NIDDY NODDY-For those who don't know, the NIDDY NODDY was a shop here in the village that specialized in knitting and related arts.
HERE's AN EXCERPT FROM THE ARTICLE:
ROCKDAY, A TRADITION OBSERVED BY WOMEN IN MEDIEVAL EUROPE AND COLONIAL AMERICA WHICH WAS REVIVED SIX YEARS AGO BY IRENE MILLER, OWNER OF THE NIDDY NODDY, A CROTON YARN AND NEEDLEWORK SHOP, WAS HELD AGAIN AT THE SHOP ON OLD POST ROAD.
