SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES HERMAN KAHN, GLORIA SWANSON, and PETER STRAUSS

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES HERMAN KAHN, GLORIA SWANSON, and PETER STRAUSS--click on the photos and links.

First up, from July 1966, Herman Kahn etal. and the Hudson Institute: Hudson Institute Discusses Unthinkable at 5th Anniversary--a'la thermo-nuclear war and more.

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW: In 1960, Princeton University Press published On Thermonuclear War, a book-length expansion of Kahn's lecture notes while employed by Rand Corporation. Major controversies ensued, and in the end, Kahn and RAND had a parting of ways.  Kahn moved to Croton-on-Hudson, intending to establish a new think tank, less hierarchical and bureaucratic in its organization. MORE HERE.

Next up, some bits and pieces about Croton's own Gloria Swanson

First up, a blurb about Swanson's "country home" from 1925 and The Tarrytown Daily News:

GLORIA SWANSON COMING TO HER CROTON HOME (With the "Marquise" in tow.)

It's followed by a 1923 ad for Swanson in the French comedy BLUEBEARD'S EIGHTH WIFE. The film was based on the French play La huitième femme de Barbe-Bleue by Alfred Savoir which is based on the Bluebeard tales of the 15th century. Paramount remade the story in 1938 directed by Ernst Lubitsch and starring Gary Cooper and Claudette Colbert.

Next up a very detailed review of Masada, which starred Peter O'Toole and Croton's Peter Strauss from a very interesting blog called  WEAPONSMAN

Saturday Matinee 2013 045: Masada (1981, TV)

(PLEASE NOTE--the site states: Our focus is on weapons: their history, effects and employment. This is not your go-to place for gun laws or gun politics; other people have that covered.)

That being said, your editor thinks Masada was one of the finest television series ever made, despite some shortcomings.  You can see the 1981 ABC promo here.
