QUESTION: WHY IS A RAISED FIST THE ICON OF CROTON ENVIRONMENTALISTS?

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

WHY IS A RAISED FIST THE ICON OF CROTON ENVIRONMENTALISTS?

Excerpt from this letter: "The new iconography of the environmental movement in Croton is the raised clenched fist. I will leave it to others to discuss the political history of the fist; I will simply observe that we all intuitively know what a clenched fist means. The clenched fist is not the outstretched hand. The clenched fist is the will to power; the subordination of the individual to the demands of the collective. The clenched fist is the perfect icon for Croton’s environmental movement, chosen with care by people who know the history of the environmental movement and the political history of the chosen icon."

  1. Is this the symbol of the "Love Your Neighbor" signs that appear everywhere in Croton??

  3. I was wondering about that when I saw it, and yes, Tom Faranda, it is infantile stuff. It's kind of annoying tough, to Steinberg's point, when you see some of these people with a plastic bag, a bigger house than they need (oops am I socialist or are they), and a big SUV.

  4. Invoking revolution. Go on and march, make sure to go home on your bike or in your electric car to your tiny house with the solar panels and composting toilet. An embarrassment. The local businesses are dreading this from what I hear.

  5. If you close one eye and cock your head to the side, it kind of looks like a leaf. Or maybe it's a fist scrunching up a plastic bag.

  6. This is nothing more than political p.r. opportunity for past, current and would be politicians. The only one worth listening to is Sandy Galef. Even then there are dozens of things happening in Croton and the area on the day of the march. We'll be doing those. A friend whose house is near the library said she will be watching how many people show up in electric cars and bikes at the library.

    1. Yeah if you look at the online photos, hardly any Croton people, in fact not a whole lot of people at all but lots of politicos, next to no kids, no families with kids, or young people. Less than 90 people if that at its best despite all the pre-march hoo-ha hype. Hundreds were expected. They stayed home. In fact except for France, most of the world stayed home. Might be a good idea to go without the fist the next time. It turned a lot of people off. If there's a next time.

  8. I'm just grateful it's over. Not that anyone is listening but their own echo chambers. Pretty p*SS-*SS poor showing just about everywhere we looked.
