Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things
Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our
houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
As many of you know, Don Daubney has coached Croton Harmon High School basketball for many many years. Please take a moment to read a note from Doris Daubney, re-printed here with permission:
Well, my husband Don and I are in a state of shock. He just walked into the house after having a meeting with the new in his first year Athletic Director Tom Cunningham at Croton Harmon High School, who at the end of basketball season had given Don an extremely favorable review as the jv basketball coach only to be told now that he was not putting his name in for being hired next year. The reason he was told was because he had allowed 2 boys from the 8 th grade to play up after their approval from the school doctor this year on the jv team.
The school policy apparently allows a student to play up only one level and Mr. Cunningham was told by the Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Fuhrman if he submitted Don's name for the job next year the school board would deny his appointment based on the decision to play up two boys.
Don has been a coach in the school district for many years. He has held the JV basketball position for the last 17 years always with a positive, favorable review from the previous athletic directors as well.
It seems that there are several others, the superintendent, the High School Principal and the Athletic Director who have been overlooking this policy and we have to feel that possibly age discrimination could be a factor? .."there is much more to this story. Why have they overlooked it and now suddenly decide to make an example of it. Should they not have any accountability? What is the real story here. We may never know!

What madness is this! First the summer programs now this. I am so grateful that you are keeping us informed on this! Please let us know what we can do. Linda
ReplyDeleteThis is ridiculous! Don has done a wonderful job for years, loves teaching the kids and more than just puts in his Time. He puts his full heart and sole into coaching these children.
ReplyDeleteTalking about a petition. Let you know if it happens. In the meanwhile write to the school district NOW.
ReplyDeleteFormer student Terrance
Thank you for posting this, Maria - the administration needs to be held accountable for this decision.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU SO MUCH MARIA. Honestly you are the best site. This is ridiculous. Keep us posted on what if anything we can do.
ReplyDeleteTom
I don't understand. My daughter was moved up and the coach wasn't removed.
ReplyDeleteplaying up has been going on for years including girls soccer. what's going on
ReplyDeletePlaying up has been happening since 1986... Melissa Wood and I as 7th graders were allowed to PLAY UP to the Varsity Track team.. Coach I am sure has done NOTHING wrong.
ReplyDeletePlaying up goes as far back as the 1953/1954 school year when I competed on the Varsity Track team, and Coach Simmons was not reprimanded.
DeleteAs a former School Board member in Croton, to not re-hire this man, who is a wholesome role model, is truly criminal. Don Daubney is a blessing to the district. Rethink this decision!!!

This is ridiculous. Coach Daubney has done nothing but good for the youth in this town for a long time. There is no grounds for this level of action.
ReplyDeleteI actually played basketball for Coach Daubney in his first year at CHHS and have followed his coaching ever since. I have returned a number of times to watch him coach and consider him a key individual who helped shape my life at a very young age. I know not of the politics involved at the School Board level but I do know that this is a wonderful, special individual who has had such a profound and positive influence on so many. I would hope that Coach Daubney would be afforded the opportunity to continue as the JV coach to the benefit of CHHS as well the many students under his guide.
ReplyDeleteThis has been common practice for years w no implication on the coaches. If they have a reason to change this now he should have been advised, that's it, not terminated. What a shame.
ReplyDeleteThis is bizarre. There is nothing new about kids playing up, particularly in a district as small as ours.
ReplyDeleteThis is bizarre. Playing up has been happening for years, across all sports. I would hope Coach Daubney would be allowed an appeal of this decision.
ReplyDeleteThere's more to this than meets the eye. Do what you have to do Coach Daubney!
ReplyDeleteMadness.
