Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things
Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our
houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
The Clearwater Festival, staged for decades, will not be
held this year. The executive director of the Beacon-based environmental
organization founded by the late Pete Seeger said this evening that the
economic condition of the organization is “challenged” and the group can’t
“risk money on a festival.” http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/story/news/2016/01/20/economically-challenged-clearwater-wont-held-festival-year/79076808/

P.S. To those commenters who were somehow blaming Mayor Schmidt for this unfortunate turn of events, your editor has a suggestion: read more, react less, then repeat. Here's hoping that Clearwater can work through their difficulties. They are an important part of Croton's history.
UPDATED 1/21 The reason why Clearwater has cancelled the festival; they are restoring their flagship instead; POUGHKEEPSIE JOURNAL
Not surprised. I read somewhere that they made less than $35K last year on it because it's weather dependent and it rained.
ReplyDeletePete Seeger would have wept at the political opportunists who swept in when this news broke on social media. Yes folks, they're unhappy at how it all turned out last November and clearly it's all the fault of Greg Schmidt! (Hey that awful Toughman's relocation to Rockland County was even thrown in for good measure)!!! And this is only one of the reasons why I voted for Croton United. This kind of silly-ness just has to stop. Now that's this is out there, I really do hope that the Clearwater organization can get a handle on their finances. I attended many festivals throughout the years and they are woven into not only my memories but the history of Croton. All things change I know but this would be a hard blow to take.
ReplyDeleteSad to see it go
ReplyDeleteJournal News reporting it's been cancelled for this year.
ReplyDeleteYes. AND several FB posts from members of the organization show lots of in-fighting as well.
ReplyDeleteBEACON, N.Y. >> The annual Hudson Valley music festival folk singer Pete Seeger staged for decades has been canceled this year because the environmental conservation group that hosts the event is in financial trouble.
ReplyDeleteThe Poughkeepsie Journal reports the board of directors for the Beacon-based Clearwater organization decided during a meeting Wednesday night to cancel the two-day event scheduled for June.
“If we don’t start bringing in money this month and next month, we could literally have to shut our doors,” Clearwater Treasurer Stephen Smith told about 75 people assembled in the historic barn at Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park in Beacon, according to the Journal report. http://www.dailyfreeman.com/general-news/20160121/in-financial-trouble-clearwater-cancels-annual-music-festival-inaugurated-by-pete-seeger
